One major difference between Bush and Hitler is that Bush is clearly a puppet, and Hitler, although he had his own "Karl Rove " in Joseph Goebbels, was a puppet of no one.
Bush has convinced a lot of people that he is "God 's puppet, " but I have always believed God is a citizen of all the world, and not just an "American. " "I do not doubt Bush 's sincere belief in his own Christianity ", but I have also thought that if God were really speaking in Bush 's ear, everything Bush has done as president would not have turned out so disastrously. "God " would have paid more attention to detail than Bush has. I also doubt that God is an "oil man, " or that His first priority during the invasion would have been guarding the Iraqi oil ministry. It seems to me, also, that the environment would have been a higher priority to God than it is to Bush.
Bush 's public persona is such that the most common observations about him after one meets him is that he is not as dumb as one would think based on the often senseless and incoherent statements he makes. But, insider after insider has said that the administration is run not by Bush, but by a "cabal " of neocons. War profiteer extraordinaire, Dick Cheney, and Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld chief among them. Rumsfeld was, perhaps, best described by former Special Forces Soldier Stan Goff "who said in an interview that
"He [Bush] is not in fact building up the military, depending on how you define that. He is building up the weapons industry, at the behest of his mad military advisor, Donald Rumsfeld a weird man who has convinced himself without a shred of evidence to support it, that he is a military genius. "

Bush does not believe in "entitlements, " -- at least not in entitlements for the poor, although he has certainly proven he believes the rich and corporations are "entitled " -- yet somehow he believed, in spite of his dearth of achievements and lack of interest in world affairs, he was entitled to be president. And, because of his connections and because our political system is now so corrupted by money, he became the Republican 's candidate. Because of his connections -- not the least of which was a ruthless brother as governor of an important state with a campaign manager as its Secretary of State at the time -- and because, as Walter Cronkite says, 'the media no longer provides the public with the information they need to make informed decisions, ' he then became president.
In spite of the media, people are not total idiots, however, and Bush was not thought of highly before 9/11. But in their shock and ignorance and because they were not aware Bush had ignored dozens of terrorist threats and warnings and done nothing that might have helped prevent a major terrorist attack, when he stood at Ground Zero and blustered and hurled threats against those responsible for the attack, too many people made him almost a god because of his vows to seek vengeance for the destruction his lack of attention to detail had wrought.
It was a lack of attention to detail that was even more incredible than most people realized given that the most salient fact regarding George Bush 's military service is that before he was grounded from flying, Bush was a fighter pilot for the Texas Air National Guard, and by most accounts a good one. As such he undoubtedly flew mock intercepts. Therefore, as a Buzzflash reader observed, "the supreme and sad irony " is that Bush is the one president, who -- in the summer of 2001 when the increased "chatter " about terrorist attacks had George Tenet 's "hair on fire " and Richard Clark frantic with concern -- was uniquely qualified to have known what precautionary actions to take.
Especially after receiving a Presidential Daily Briefing titled "Bin Laden determined to strike in the U.S. " an engaged president, even one who hadn 't served in the Air National Guard at the very least would have put the Air National Guard on high alert and ordered fighter jets up 24/7. But, Bush did nothing. So, Bush actually went AWOL twice. Once when he failed to perform his duties in the Air National Guard for-- even the White House cannot deny -- "at least several months, " and the infinitely more important second time when despite the increased "chatter " in the summer of 2001 and numerous warnings from our own and foreign government officials, he did not interrupt his month long vacation in Texas to put the ANG on "high alert " or to take any other steps that might have prevented the tragedy of 9/11.
I am not one who believes Bush, himself, was behind the attacks of 9/11 I do not believe he would have looked so lost sitting in a classroom while he waited for someone to tell him what he should do if that had been the case.
I also do not automatically assume, as many of the people who have e-mailed me do, that our government was behind what happened that day. But, that some corporate connected entities, and, perhaps, some people in or near the administration were connected to some degree with the events of that day should not be dismissed out of hand as simply another kooky conspiracy theory. I would like to see every one of the arguments of "Scholars for 9/11 Truth " among others, refuted, especially in light of the report on the FAA failures of that day, and the release of Richard Clarke 's terrorist memo to Condaleeza Rice on January 25, 2001, and marked urgent, which was totally ignored by Rice and the Bush administration.
And now another indication of how low a priority the Bush administration assigned the terrorist threat comes from none other than "Judy Miller " who says that in the summer of 2001 she was given information that a terrorist attack was likely. She says "I got the sense that part of the reason that I was being told of what was going on was that the people in counter-terrorism were trying to get the word to the president or the senior officials through the press, because they were not able to get listened to themselves. "
However, If the administration has nothing to hide even if it was only their incompetence in ignoring the terrorist warnings, and their embarrassing personal and business connections with the Saudis who, after all, were the people who attacked us and the people who funded those attacks -- then why were they afraid of a real investigation? But then again, why did they fight the formation of a 9/11 commission, under-fund it, fight it at every juncture, black out 28 pages of the findings of the Congressional Report, etc?
IF people within the Bush administration knew about or were behind the attacks of that day, they are criminals. If they were not behind it, they are merely incompetent. It is indisputable that in spite of all of the warnings they received that a terrorist attack was likely, terrorism was clearly not a high priority to them. War for oil, dominance, and Halliburton was, and they sought to use September 11th as an excuse to advance war with Iraq. A war they had wanted since day one.
I think it likely that at the very least, Bush and the people in his administration knew that a terrorist attack of some sort would probably happen at some point in his presidency after all, there are terrorist attacks during virtually every administration -- and when it did happen he intended to use it to advance his agenda.

It is not my purpose, however, to convince anyone of who was or was not behind the attacks of September 11th. My purpose is to point out the way this administration has endeavored to use 9/11 to manipulate the populace through fear and intimidation into supporting its agenda in much the same way Hitler manipulated the German people sixty years ago.
To be concluded -- to answer some of the issues raised by those who wrote to me, the conclusion of this article has been expanded to six parts rather than five. Look for the final (I promise) installment of "America 's Hitler " tomorrow (Friday, May 26th).
