Vice President Joe Biden, U.S. Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner and U.S. Internal Revenue Service (IRS) Commissioner Douglas H. Shulman grouped to announce the launch a new interactive Tax Savings Tool available at www.WhiteHouse.gov/Recovery to help taxpayers see for themselves exactly how they could benefit from Recovery Act tax credits and collect every dollar owed when they file in the tax season. "The big guys know all the credits and deductions to claim during tax season, but we want middle class families to know just how much is out there for them this year thanks to the Recovery Act and how to take advantage of it," Biden said. "From help with college expenses to credits for cost-saving, energy-efficiency home improvements, these Recovery Act tax credits not only provide some needed relief for working Americans, but also help them invest in their families' futures." United States Justice Department spokesman Dean Boyd said lawyers were reviewing the ruling of U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia Judge James Robertson, who ordered the Pentagon to release Mohamedou Ould Slahi, an alleged 9/11 conspirator, after nearly 10 years of imprisonment at Guantanamo Bay Detention Camp. Slahi, under the orders of former United States Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld had been tortured. "He's been incarcerated, tortured and interrogated and rendered illegally," according to attorney Nancy Hollander, who represented Slahi pro bono. "After almost 10 years the government has not been able to meet the minimal burden to detain him that's required under habeas. He should be free." Judge Robertson's ruling was classified, so there was no immediate explanation for why he granted the habeas corpus petition of Mohamedou Slahi. According to the Miami Herald, "a notation in court files said an unclassified version of the ruling would be made available, but didn't say when". Source
Day424/March23rd/Tuesday: The President delivered remarks and signed the Health Insurance Reform Bill in the East Room of the White House. Transcript Video
The President traveled to the United States Department of Interior, where he delivered remarks on the health insurance reform bill. Transcript Video
The President signed into law the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, the health insurance reform bill passed by Congress. The bill also permanently reauthorized the Indian Health Care Improvement Act, which was first approved by Congress in 1976. In a statement, the President noted that, "as a Senator, I co-sponsored this Act back in 2007 because I believe it is unacceptable that Native American communities still face gaping health care disparities. Our responsibility to provide health services to American Indians and Alaska Natives derives from the nation-to-nation relationship between the federal and tribal governments. And today, with this bill, we have taken a critical step in fulfilling that responsibility by modernizing the Indian health care system and improving access to health care for American Indians and Alaska Natives".
