The President met with executives of the 13 top credit card companies at the White House. He told them:

The days of anytime, any reason rate hikes and late fee traps have to end”.

The President met in the White House with champion golfer Tiger Woods.

The President met with members of the Florida Gators football team.

United States Attorney General Eric Holder testified before the House Appropriations Committee on torture of terror suspects. “I will not permit the criminalization of policy differences. However, it is my responsibility as the Attorney General to enforce the law,” he said. Video

First Lady Michelle Obama invited the children of Exeutive Office employees to the White House and answered their questions in celebration of Take Your Children To Work Day.

Day94/April 24th/Friday: The Obama Administration announced it will bow to an American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) lawsuit and release to the ACLU by May 28, 2009 approximately 2000 pictures of prisoner abuse at Iraq, Guantanamo Bay and Afghanistan.

The President delivered a speech on the ever-increasing cost of getting a college education. He derided wasteful subsidies to lenders in the student loan program and listed the changes made:

(1)   $2500 higher education tax credit for working familes

(2)   $500 dollar boost in pell grants

(3)   in 2010, the maximum Pell Grant will be raised to $5550

(4)   pell grants will be adjusted to inflation

(5)   the Perkins Loan Program will be modernized and expanded

(6)   ending the billions wasted to lender profits in Federal Family Education Loans and shift entirely to the Direct Student Loan Program Transcript

Tammy Duckworth was sworn in as the Assistant Secretary of the United States Department of Veterans Affairs.

United States Secretary of the Treasury Timothy Geithner hosted G7 finance ministers and Group of 20 meetings in Washington D.C.
