                                   (Gertrude lets go.)

                                   CLAUDIUS (CONT'D)
            Speak, man.

                                   LAERTES
            Where is my father?

                                   CLAUDIUS
            Dead.

                                   GERTRUDE
            But not by the king.

                                   CLAUDIUS
Let him ask what he will.

                                   LAERTES
What happened?  Tell me the truth or to hell with my
allegiance!  I'll make a vow to the blackest devil!
Conscience and grace to the profoundest pit!  I dare
damnation--I'll be revenged most thoroughly for my father.

                                   CLAUDIUS
            Who would hold you back?

                                   LAERTES
No one on earth but myself.  And as for means, I'll make a
            little go a long way.

                                   CLAUDIUS
Does your writ for revenge mean you'll sweep the board,
friend and foe alike?  Winner and loser?

                                   LAERTES
            None but his enemies.

                                   CLAUDIUS
Then you should know who they are.

                                   LAERTES
To friends I open my arms--sustain them with my own blood.

                                   CLAUDIUS
Now you speak like a true gentleman.  I am guiltless of your
            father's death--I grieve for it.

                                   (Ophelia is heard singing.)

                                   CLAUDIUS (CONT'D)
            Let her come in.
