Sexist? Comparing Clinton to Annie Oakley is sexist? Would it have been more appropriate to compare her to Wyatt Earp?
Oh, it's sexist because Annie Oakley is a woman. This reminds me of an Office episode where Michael (Steve Carell) asks a Mexican American, Oscar, if there's anything he'd prefer being called to Mexican.
"What's wrong with Mexican?" Oscar asks.
"Well, nothing," Michael manages to get out, faltering, "just certain contexts."
Clinton deserved the comparison to Annie Oakly because she's spent the last few days waving the banner of the NRA. And it is simply shameless for these editors to spend five days attempting to label Obama an elitist and hide behind the shallow accusations of sexism when he returns Clinton's hateful attacks with a light-hearted joke.
This shallow accusation of sexism takes away power from the legitimate examples of sexism shown towards Clinton by the media throughout this primary.
Item #7: "Clinton Uses Sharp Attacks in Tense Debate." Written by the one-and-only Jeff Zeleny. April 17. This article, published today, concludes mercilessly that, "The result [of Wednesday night's debate] was arguably one of Mr. Obama’s weakest debate performances."
More typical Jeff Zissou: neutral sentences followed by sentences with dire implications, like, "Senator Barack Obama found himself consistently on the defensive."
Item #8: "'60s Radicals Become Issue in Campaign of 2008." Written by Larry Rohter and Michael Luo. April 17. Why is this legitimated by The New York Times? Obama ought to start walking out of debates that ask him these foolish questions. Good for Huffington Post for calling out George Stephanopoulos and Charlie Gibson for asking these ridiculous questions written by the RNC.
Item #9: "You Might Be an Obama Supporter if..." Written by Who Cares Anymore. April 17th. This article is perfectly tailored to compliment the "elite" narrative the Times is pushing on Obama. It listed "You like burgers made from grass-fed local beef," and if you eat "Bare Naked Granola." The online article featured a picture of this granola beside a picture of Obama.
There are plenty of more anti-Obama articles on the New York Times website. Obama was spot on to use humor to call attention to this Salem witch hunt, but he must continue to call attention to the mechanisms behind this attack. If there is one thing that voters hate, it's being told how they should vote, and that's exactly what the New York Times and the main stream media is doing here.
