CLAUDIUS
Where are my Switzers? Guard the door!
(MESSENGER enters.)
CLAUDIUS
What's the matter?
MESSENGER
Save yourself, my lord: Laertes has assembled a rebel force.
They're crying--"Laertes shall be king!"--as if the world
begins now, the former order be damned! They've swept aside
your officers.
GERTRUDE
On the wrong hunt! Danish dogs!
(Doors burst open, enter Laertes and
FOLLOWERS.)
LAERTES
(to Followers)
Stay outside the doors.
1ST FOLLOWER
No, we'll stay.
LAERTES
Give me leave.
(Followers bow/exit.)
LAERTES
Oh thou vile king--give me my father!
GERTRUDE
(moving to restrain Laertes)
Calm, Laertes.
LAERTES
A drop of calm blood proclaims me a bastard your majesty.
CLAUDIUS
Let him go, Gertrude; do not fear, divinity protects a king,
treason can but peep to what it would.
(Beat.)
CLAUDIUS (CONT'D)
Laertes, why art thou incensed? Let him go, Gertrude.
