However, he soon became the President of King's College -- a fact he never seemed shy about mentioning -- and that may have blunted his need to engage in the stupid. He did a well-received (though, again, highly questionable) movie treatment of his "roots" book, and went on to pen two more works that were safer things within conservative circles: God loves you, and Obama doesn't.

But even the appointment and the movie plaudits have failed to bring him back into the limelight he once enjoyed. Once upon a time Dinesh D'Souza was a big star, shining brightly in the dark of Clinton's neo-liberal nightmare. Now he's just another prick of light in the tattered, black veil surrounding Obama -- a man who, like Clinton, is only a liberal if you squint your eyes and pretend really hard.

However, if there's one thing everyone loves? It's a martyr. Especially a person who's been martyred by the likes of Barack Hussein Obama, who, as we all know, sits at his desk each night studying his long list of enemies, and planning how to use the agencies and machines of state to screw with the people who dared to oppose his evil, socialist agenda... or so we would be led to believe by any number of paranoid pundits and prognosticators out there on the rightward sides of Noiseland.

(Most of whom, I would like to note, are still free to malign the man, six or so years into his reign.)

But it's a charge that D'Souza was quite happy to make, through his lawyer, once this unfortunate incident came to light. And it's a charge that went from the lunatic fringe right over into the mainstream conservative circles. A gaggle of congress critters even spent valuable floor time demanding an explanation as to why D'Souza was "singled out" for attention.

And even now, after pleading guilty, and admitting guilt on FOX News, it's a charge they're still happy to make on his behalf, seemingly oblivious to his need for solemn contriteness. It would have been tragic if it hadn't been so bloody farcical.

And, again, providing this wasn't also part of the overall plan.

Here's how I see it working. D'Souza spends the next couple months riding the sympathy wave. He makes deals with a publisher for a book to be written when he gets out of the pokey, maybe something along the lines of "a good man goes to jail." Maybe he even marries the woman he lost his college presidency over, just to make sure everything's above board.

When he gets sentenced, this upcoming September, he acts contrite but defiant. He spends a year and change rediscovering his purpose, his god, and the things that made him great. Reads a lot, stays quiet, avoids prison sex.

And when he comes out he can offer himself up as a reborn hero, having been through the crucible of Obama's evil vengeance, ready to take on whatever benighted legacy the man's left behind at that point, and possibly even hail the arrival of a conservative antidote, depending on who wins the next Presidential election.

An All-American Christ by way of Mumbai -- risen from his tomb, sixteen months later, to show us the way to conservative salvation.

And even if the plan doesn't work, because he gets let off the hook in September, like his lawyer is pleading to have happen? Well, he can reverse face yet again and claim he fought the devil and won. It's a win-win situation, either way, and all it's cost him is time and money -- the latter of which he can always recoup later, provided the plan works.

It's almost ingenious: akin to the young man who breaks his toys to try and get more. It's a sad commentary that while such misbehavior in a child is punished, an adult who ruins his life for the sake of publicity gets to explain himself on FOX News, and is made out to be the victim, somehow.

But given D'Souza's genius at making double-standards work for him, that seems quite appropriate.

However, I'm going to go back up the limb I've been climbing out onto and admit something D'Souza, himself, seems pathologically incapable of: I could be wrong, here -- very, very wrong.

This could just be a string of unrelated events, sewn into some underhanded, grand design by my feverish imagination. Maybe Dinesh D'Souza really is just a smart person who did a very stupid thing, and now has to face the music for it. Maybe he's cobbling together the best tune he can out of the broken wreckage of his career. And if he seems like he's got a plan, maybe it's just the well-serving sense of calm he tends to project, saving his butt one more time.

Maybe that's the truth, but it makes for a really lousy end to what's been, up until now, a very entertaining, and well-choreographed fall from grace.
