The progressives who backed Obama in the 2008 election did so for the best of reasons, never dreaming that he would behave as he has, since taking office. They thought they were supporting an able, articulate, sincere man who would inspire significant change, perhaps reminiscent of the New Deal. Instead we have a man who has adopted almost all the most obnoxious policies of the Bush Administration, even adding a few new ones.

Am I exaggerating? Here are some examples of what the Obama Administration has done:

-Escalated the Afghan war

-Continued our occupation of Iraq

-Expanded killing by unmanned drones in Pakistan, and extended it to Yemen and perhaps elsewhere.

-Launched a military attack in Libya without any congressional authority.

-Bullied "liberal" Dems into voting for war budget.

-Increased the military budget.

-Announced that the president has the authority to condemn people, including US citizens, to death (via assassination).

-Enunciated a policy whereby people can be imprisoned permanently, without due process.

-Announced that the "extraordinary rendition" program is still operative.

-Kept open Guantanamo, Bagram, and an unknown number of other sites holding untried prisoners.

-Refused to prosecute, or even to investigate, Cheney and other higher ups admittedly responsible for torture.

-Launched a major campaign against government whistle-blowers, including the shameful abuse of Bradley Manning.

-Endorsed the Bush policy of unwarranted electronic snooping on the communications of Americans.

-Forced passage of a Health Care Bill drafted by industry--refusing even to consider single payer.
