The Chavez "threat"

The NY Times' outrageous propaganda wars against Hugo Chavez are a sign of desperation, for Chavez is wildly popular, in part for his love of the poor, and in part for his fearless tendency to speak the truth.

In the latest flap with Washington, the Venezuelan president had been negotiating for the release of hostages, even Americans, taken by FARC, and might eventually have been able to free Ms. Betancourt (whose health has been suffering).

At that moment, the Colombian aerial attack came, assisted by the U.S., and immediately condoned by it.  When Venezuela's Chavez and Ecuador's Correa reacted, "terrorism" was alleged.

But the actual terror is in Washington, of a public relations coup by a truly democratic national movement and its utterly charismatic leader, who has had the courage and humor to name the rogue regime in our own nation as the source of such awful despair.

It might also be a factor that the Times and other staid members of the Mainstream Media in the U.S. fear the Southern Hemisphere's "Radio Telesur" out of Venezuela, which broadcasts another worldview than that of Capitalist materialism, and that new paradigm might appeal to the multitudes more than anything the Times has to offer.
