Ask any New Yorker who, I've heard, is more than willing to say Giuliani was a terrible mayor. I don't know from firsthand experience; I've never been to New York City. It's enough to follow the antics of Los Angeles Mayor Antonio "Photo-op-Loves-the-Press-in More-Ways-Than-One" Villaraigosa.

It's no secret that so many NYC firefighters lost their lives when the twin towers collapsed was because Giuliani never bothered to have their radios upgraded.

Loss of communications caused the loss of so many lives, because the firemen couldn't be called back. Giuliani knew about the problem, which had existed from before the first WTC bombing, and did nothing to fix it. For that alone, Giuliani should have been sued, tried, convicted and jailed for negligent homicide.

A dose of good judgment would have told Giuliani that he should have spared one of those 21 tax cuts he brags about and used it for new radios for the guys.

Another tremendous Giuliani mistake and lack of judgement was shunning the advice of all the experts who told him to build the City's emergency communications center in Brooklyn, and not in the basement of the WTC.

Bullheaded as always and knowing better than anyone else, Giuliani went ahead and placed it in the worst place in the world, the WTC, which had attacked once before.

He became known as "America's Mayor" after 9/11, because all we saw were televised pictures of him marching with his entourage through the smoke-filled streets of New York looking like he knew what he was doing to direct the rescue efforts.

In fact, he wasn't a man trying to repair his city, but of a man who had no home to go to.

Had the emergency center been built in Brooklyn, that is where he would have and should have been directing the emergency response.

If Giuliani couldn't see the wisdom of building the emergency center miles from New York's favorite terrorists' target, then he will be Bush-light if he's elected president. Just what we need. Another I'm-right, you're-wrong leader whose eyes are blind and ears are deaf to all, but his own thoughts.

Of all the possible Republican candidates running for the presidential nomination, Giuliani bears the most watching. He's not the country's mayor; he knows nothing about preventing a terrorist attack; he uses the fact that he was mayor of New York when the city was attacked as if it were a cloak of glory rather than a mantle of shame.

Remember, in a Bush-light move, Giuliani tried to hold onto his mayorship by suggesting that New York's November mayoral election be either cancelled or postponed.

If Giuliani were elected president, we'd soon be left with another president who, in the end, might be supported, by only his wife and dog, if he has a dog, and the wife is doubtful considering the frequency with which he trades them in for a new model.

Hardball Transcript, July 11, 2007

And coming up next, a national firefighters union is going after Rudy Giuliani. The union of the firefighters, including the firefighters of New York, is taking on Mr. 9/11 himself, Rudy Giuliani.
