And he does it for free! Presumably out of deference to his day job and his responsibilities to his family, he maintains his anonymity (sort of -- a quick search reveals his name) and doesn't write books.
Therein lays his only drawback. Billmon periodically disappears from the Web for agonizing stretches -- like for the last month. "Is this the end?" his readers wonder. One pictures his wife: "You have to choose -- the blog or us."
He's back now, but for those periods when Billmon is out of action, try The Rootless Cosmopolitan: TonyKaron.org.
Visit these blogs, and, if possible, donate to Cursor and Thousand Reasons -- as well as OpEdNews -- to ensure their solvency.

"It's hard to tell people not to smoke when you have a cigarette dangling from your mouth." -- Mohamed El Baradei, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency
"As it turns out, it was roughly about the time of the Spanish American War that we began the huge decline in voting that led to today's failure of roughly half or more of our citizens to vote in presidential elections. The corrupt politics of the Gilded Age had much to do with leading to this. People realized that they could do little to improve the situation by voting."
If you look at the numbers, most eligible voters don't bother to vote. Add to them the number of people who vote for third parties, or are unaligned with any party, and what you get is a majority of people in this country. I have yet to find another site as tolerant of, and even welcoming to and supportive of the majority as opednews.com
Many sites that call themselves progressive are actually cheerleaders for the Democratic Party, which isn't progressive at all. It can't even be described as reactionary, as when 60% or 70% or even 80% or 90% of its base wants something, the Democratic Party will still march blindly along to the drums of the military-industrial complex and ignore its own base completely, believing that since they aren't likely to go over to the Republicans, and there really isn't any other viable choice in a corrupt two-party system, they have nothing to lose.
So the majority of Americans have been boycotting elections since 1898 as Velvel says, not out of apathy or ignorance, but because we don't like being given only the choice between two evils, the greater and the lesser, and never being allowed the option of voting for a good, and because it is very unlikely that our votes will be counted anyway (See "Deliver the Vote: A History of Election Fraud, An American Political Tradition -- 1742-2004," by Tracy Campbell, c. 2005).
Any site that is not concerned with the majority of Americans, cannot be called progressive, and however popular, most certainly cannot be considered populist.
Many of us avoid the mainstream media because it is full of lies and propaganda that, as Chomsky puts it, is designed to manufacture consent. We do not consent.
So if there are other sites as progressive as this one, I'd really like to know about them. Merely linking articles is not sufficient if they do not allow feedback and have full interactivity. We don't like being talked at or down to. We prefer to express our own opinions as we do here.
