Impeachment Should Not Be A Taboo For Democrats

Because of what happened in Windham County, impeachment is now part of the national political discussion. Congressman Bernard Sanders, who initially kept his distance from the town meeting impeachment resolution, eventually signed on after getting an earful from his constituents.

"The process worked exactly as Jefferson and Madison intended," said Nichols.

There will be 40 more towns in Vermont that will try to put impeachment resolutions on the warrant for their 2007 town meetings. The critical mass is growing around the country for Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney to be held accountable for their actions, which certainly meet Jefferson's standard of an elected despotism running amok.

The Democrats will pay a high political price if they fail to uphold their constitutional duties and make the Bush administration take responsibility for the disaster in Iraq they created with their lies.

Impeachment is foolish

Granted the founding fathers, after inaugurating the world's first democracy, were fearful of Royalism and put impeachment into the constitution.

But even for people who are willing to try to interpret impeachment as a general response to Presidential misbehavior, have to agree that Impeachment should be triggered by criminal, rather than political failings of the President.

At this juncture the impeach Bush movement is based on political considerations rather than criminal acts committed by President Bush or high Administration officials acting under his direction and supervision.

It is inimical to the rule of law to prosecute for political reasons.

It is a waste of resources to initiate an impeachment proceeding against the President until a court has been stymied in prosecuting him on statutory grounds.

The Congressional actions for both Nixon's resignation and Clinton's impeachment occurred after courts had charged them with infractions of specific statutes.

In Nixon's case he was indicted as an unnamed conspirator in the burglarly of Daniel Ellsberg's office, in Clinton's case he faced a potential indictment for perjury stemming from testimony regarding Monica Lewinsky's liason with him.

At this time there is not even a censure motion against the President or the Vice President.

We must not set a precedent for impeachments unaccompanied by the commission of actual crimes.
