In hopes of increasing voter participation, Louisiana senior citizens and disabled voters may be able to vote by mail absentee ballot in the October primary, according to the News Star. The election-law changes would allow voters over the age of 65, as well as those with a “handicapped license plate” to request a mail absentee ballot. The amendments would also extend early voting by a day.
“'You have to continually look for new and creative ways to make the electoral process more convenient for our citizens,” [Sen. Lydia Jackson, D-Shreveport] said. 'Early voting was a good start, but the absentee measure will help relieve the pressure of lines and long waits for seniors and citizens with mobility impediments.'”
The election law changes await Voting Rights Act approval by the U.S. Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division.
