Tuesday, the Louisiana House rejected a bill to create satellite voting centers around the state for New Orleans residents displaced by Hurricane Katrina, according to the Associated Press. The bill would recreate laws set up for New Orleans' 2006 mayoral election where more than 10 thousand voters cast ballots in satellite voting centers, but was called “patently unconstitutional” by Rep. Charlie Lancaster because it would give New Orleans residents preferential voting rights in state elections.
The voting rights of the mentally ill are in question in this International Herald Tribune story: “This summer, recommendations for national standards will be released by a group of psychiatrists, lawyers and others led by the American Bar Association, suggesting that people be prevented from voting only if they cannot indicate, with or without help, a 'specific desire to participate in the voting process.'”
