In other voting rights news, a new bill incorporating full voter representation in the District of Columbia and a fourth seat in Utah was introduced, the Washington Post reported Wednesday. Prominent Republican Senator Orrin G. Hatch rallies support for the bill: "I . . . am certain [Hatch's] co-sponsorship will lead to the breakthrough we've been searching for to bring an end to the 200-year disenfranchisement of District residents," said Senator Joe Lieberman. Early vote centers make their debut in Wayne County, Indiana this week, according to the Indianapolis Star on Wednesday. Election reform efforts to make voting easier, such as vote centers and mail-in ballots are still unproven regarding mobilization of new voters. According to the story, “if the experiment goes well, [Secretary of State Todd] Rokita will push for legislation that would give counties the option of implementing vote centers.” State Rep. Matt Pierce introduced a Vote By Mail bill to take effect next year that stalled in the Senate committee after passing the House. Early voting proved disastrous as a result of problems with new technology in many Texas counties, according to the Houston Chronicle. The new centralized database of voter records was intended to comply with the Help America Vote Act of 2002, but instead revoked the registration of thousands of voters before the May 12 primary. A report in the Monitor on Monday says about 10,000 registered voters were accidentally removed from voter rolls because of the new system.
