Tell A Friend

By Mick Youther (about the author)     Page 2 of 2 page(s)

• "[T]he decision has been made and military operations are under way [in Iran]." --ThinkProgress.com, 4/18/06

• "We are conducting military operations inside Iran right now. The evidence is overwhelming." --CNN, 9/18/06)

• "I think the plan's been picked: bomb the nuclear sites in Iran. It's a terrible idea, it's against US law and it's against international law, but I think they've decided to do it." --The Nation, 9/21/06

Did Congress declare war on Iran and not tell the American people--or has "the Decider" decided to involve America in another undeclared war? After the Viet Nam War, I did not believe America would ever do such a stupid thing again; but here we are. America sacrificed 58,000 American lives and laid waste to Viet Nam because the "War Party" claimed that, if we "cut and run", all the nations in Southeast Asia would fall like dominos to the Communists. They were wrong (or lying). We pulled out of Viet Nam; the dominoes didn't fall; and now Viet Nam is a trading partner.

Now the War Party claims:

• "The safety of America depends on the outcome of the battle in the streets of Baghdad." --George W. Bush, 9/11/06

Fortunately, the War Party is wrong again, because America is not going to win the war in Iraq or Afghanistan. It is like Viet Nam. We may win all the battles, but we cannot win the war. The War Party doesn't care. Win or lose--American tax dollars pour into the coffers of Halliburton, Bechtel, and other favored no-bid contractors. That is the real reason for war.

If we ever want these wars to end, we will have to stop them. That means going to the polls in November and voting the Republicans out of power. In our current two-party system of government, that means voting for the Democratic candidates for Congress--as distasteful as that may be in come cases. Electing Democrats and breaking the one-party control of our government is the only way we can stop the War Party's dreams of perpetual war.

If you are a die-hard Republican who cannot bring yourself to vote for a Democrat--stay home on election day. Don't vote for Republican candidates unless you want to see America start a real World War. If you believe that is a good idea, don't go to the polls--go to the nearest recruiting station and enlist in the military. The War Party is quickly running out of cannon fodder, and they have many more wars planned for America.

It is up to us to stop them. Vote!
