I have one life and one chance to make it count for something . . . I'm free to choose what that something is, and the something I've chosen is my faith.... [M]y faith demands that I do whatever I can, wherever I am, whenever I can, for as long as I can with whatever I have to try to make a difference.
War may sometimes be a necessary evil. But no matter how necessary, it is always an evil, never a good. We will not learn how to live together in peace by killing each other's children. --Jimmy Carter, Nobel Lecture, 12/10/02
My concept of human rights has grown to include not only the rights to live in peace, but also to adequate healthcare, shelter, food, and to economic opportunity. I hope this award reflects a universal acceptance and even embrace of this broad-based concept. --Jimmy Carter, statement on the Carter Center's website
Bush's faith inspires his compassionate conservatism, which comes across as a fantasy to the millions of Americans who are being left out in this latest version of trickle-down economics. In his book, Carter quotes a Christian friend, telling him that the new economic philosophy in Washington is that a rising tide raises all yachts (p. 4). Bush's base probably finds this little quip amusing, but Hurricane Katrina showed us that some people don't have yachts; and when the water rises too fast, they drown and/or lose their homes. That is their reality.
As a young man, Jimmy Carter was deeply influenced by a sermon called, If you were arrested for being a Christian, would there be enough evidence to convict you? Now, with a lifetime of evidence presented, I think Jimmy Carter will be convicted of being a Christian in the first degree, and I bet The Judge will sentence him to life.
