Television stations base their ad rates charged to their advertisers on the amount of listeners. If fewer people are tuning into a program and they write the network why and it must come in numbers, television executives will pay attention. That is because they make millions of dollars from these programs. The advertisers will also pay attention.  They did feel this immense pressure in the Don Imus situation.  Pressure was brought to bear on these stations and advertisers and they did hear the outraged viewers.

In closing when a reader brought to my attention something that Don Imus also stated, “Janet Reno's having a press conference. Ms. Reno, of course, has Parkinson's disease, has a noticeable tremor. […] I don't know how she gets that lipstick on (laughter) looking like a rodeo clown." I do find that equally offensive to what he said of the Rutgers women’s basketball team.  It took Al Sharpton and Jessie Jackson this long to notice this pattern of bad behavior?  Why didn’t they come to Janet Reno’s side and any number of people that Imus threw his insidious barbs at?  We should be our own moral barometers and not Sharpton and Jackson.
