The authors - General John Shalikashvili, the former chairman of the US joint chiefs of staff and Nato's ex-supreme commander in Europe, General Klaus Naumann, Germany's former top soldier and ex-chairman of Nato's military committee, General Henk van den Breemen, a former Dutch chief of staff, Admiral Jacques Lanxade, a former French chief of staff, and Lord Inge, field marshal and ex-chief of the general staff and the defence staff in the UK - paint an alarming picture of the threats and challenges confronting the west in the post-9/11 world and deliver a withering verdict on the ability to cope.

Well, when you have war criminals and militarist running the show, taking in NO counter proposals or suggestions I'll bet it was pretty damned grim putting together that report. Damned grim.

The post 9/11 world has been run by a war room in Dick Cheney's office. The post 9/11 world is full of lies and coverups. There has been no TRUE information ever released - and even the 9/11 commission is admitting that they were't given all the information they needed!! I can see it now - that spread sheet spread out in front of the NATO commanders as they sat at the conference tables "THREAT" "CHALLENGES" crying out in bold letters.

"SOLUTIONS" = which might include TELLING THE TRUTH, with non manipulated intelligence - was probably not the highest agenda item if one at all.

The five commanders argue that the west's values and way of life are under threat, but the west is struggling to summon the will to defend them. The key threats are:

· Political fanaticism and religious fundamentalism.

· The "dark side" of globalisation, meaning international terrorism, organised crime and the spread of weapons of mass destruction.

· Climate change and energy security, entailing a contest for resources and potential "environmental" migration on a mass scale.

· The weakening of the nation state as well as of organisations such as the UN, Nato and the EU.

Read those one more time!! Do you see Cheney's dark hand in writing them? He's referred to the need for a "dark side" to deal with the challenge to Western Society, he's set up the Energy task force to avoid looking at solutions to energy problems, AND he's worked hard and long at destroying national sovereignty in every nation. The criminals in the White House have operated with the assumption that they OWN the world, as Noam Chomsky has pointed out, they OWN what happens to the planet itself, and to retain control of every square inch they have come up with the ideology and framework to ensure that they stay IN Control ..

So let's look at Cheney, the PRIVATE commander in chief of the so-called free world has to say ; it's truly his hand in writing what comes next. This is the science fiction book we've been reading for a looooong time, so what is his ENDGAME = the Guardian enlightens:

To prevail, the generals call for an overhaul of Nato decision-taking methods, a new "directorate" of US, European and Nato leaders to respond rapidly to crises, and an end to EU "obstruction" of and rivalry with Nato. Among the most radical changes demanded are:

· A shift from consensus decision-taking in Nato bodies to majority voting, meaning faster action through an end to national vetoes.

· The abolition of national caveats in Nato operations of the kind that plague the Afghan campaign.

· No role in decision-taking on Nato operations for alliance members who are not taking part in the operations.

· The use of force without UN security council authorisation when "immediate action is needed to protect large numbers of human beings".

When one thinks about the USA leading a UN (Bush asking the UN for a resolution to destroy Iraq's sovreignity, plunder it for multinational corporations..everything starts to make sense. I hear ya . here are my immediate thoughts ..

I do not for ONE MINUTE believe the eugenics nonsense of 'the world can only hold .. " mythology. IT is a MYTH created by nazis .

It leaves out the synthetic terror use and the effects of the nazis on the CIA. It is literally BANNED from the air in the US (and it's so powerful I am amazed that youtube has not "disappeared" it.

Must be born in the United States

It appears that no one born in the United States was on the commission. These commissions should only have member representing the United States who are 100% United States Citizens and who were born in the United States of Non-Political refuge parents.

I notice that articles about this are appearing - and threads are being posted to on other sites. No one's noticed that point that I've read!!

One fo the problems is the adminstration's doing away with Geneva as the Supreme Law of the Land - until CONGRESS acts in some way to abolish it!! Citizens really don't have enough education in the US to even know much about this unless they serve in the armed forces.

I disagree with you somewhat . . . I don't think being born in the US makes all that much difference .. you either know the law and you obey it (or serve it, I mean) or you don't. Doesn't matter what soil you were born on. Very obviously we have a President born on American soil (and a fourth branch of government as well) and his interpretation of the law is vastly in contradiction with US laws - and what's more he is really out of touch with United States history. He works as Supreme Law Enforcer (for his own ends) of an empire the US cannot afford, rather than for We the People - which he takes money to do.

While I don't see a lot of comment in the Canadian Press about this yet, the whole issue of Canada's involvement in the FAILED and failing NATO "experiment" in Afghanistan is likely to bring down the government in a matter of weeks. Canadians do not want to be in Afghanistan. I think there was a marked Tipping Point when they sent the Vandoo regiment over there in the fall.

I have sent this article (and another one) to the Liberal Party leader to see if it raises some eyebrows with him. OBVIOUSLY it should be given notice by all the partys in Canada as to what NATO is doing.

The issue of the use of torture is still being HOTLY discussed here - and this is being done under NATO watch. The evidence is overwhelming and the BC Civil Liberites people just released it. So I think we are going to see some veyr heavy debates up here - Dion just came back from Afghanistan after The Harper refused the opposition visas to go for along time. And when they did go, that became a hot button, too - as Harper caused GRAVE security breaches by letting people (the enemy as well) know exactly where Dion was going. (!!!!!)

Yes, the "NATO experiment" is of grave concern for every side -

Canada's torture list is of grave concern; that is being politicized ala the Bush (and Israel's) demand - and there are accusations that the US ambassador bullied Harper into throwing Geneva out the window. What threats were made no one knows.

My thinking is that this NATO statement is the result of some threats, quite frankly. I cannot think of any other explanation.

I listened to Cheney on c-span today and it's the same ole junk - BE AFRAID, BE VERY AFRAID which is to make people rely on government some more and have their freedoms taken away in the name of "security" ..

I think the NATO "thang" is his current card - and we'll just have to wait and see what the next one is after this - oughta be a doozy cuz this one is hard to top!!

The rumor is that Patraes is to take over NATO as SUPREME COMMANDER - how fitting for a servant for this Fear Leaders running America - the Imperial Cesaers of the World, eh??
