It was already very clear that people around the world were responding, were empathetic, were cooperating in a multitude of ways. The President remembered a comment by President Ronald Reagan, that perhaps the world needed an invasion of aliens from outer space to provide the incentive for all peoples to come together. Perhaps this ugly episode might serve that same purpose. Perhaps, indeed, time would show that those who had died in this disaster had NOT died in vain, that their sacrifice had set humanity on a new course, a course that would reject violence, embrace justice, that would believe wholeheartedly in the possibility of a peaceful world.

Too bad this is just a fable.
