Because the bill is stacked on the unconstitutional foundation of "Studying" (ie spying on,  legislating based on and holding Government-conducted hearings based on) thought itself, it is too flawed to be amended, and must be tossed out in its entirety.

The War on Terror has actually targeted innocent civilians, not terrorists, by overwhelming statistics of the ACLU, Electronic Frontier Foundation and the Center for Constitutional Rights. To give you only one example of such a violation, linked below is an actual declassified FBI "International Terrorism Matters" investigation of the Thomas Merton Center in Philadelphia, who were targeted as "international terrorists" because of organizing an Iraq War peace rally:

www.aclu.org/safefree/spyfiles/28000res20060314.html

And here is the ACLU's recently done 20-page Free Speech Report which apparently has become necessary to uphold, protect and defend in post-911 USA:

http://www.aclu.org/freespeech/gen/31878prs20070920.html

Please act urgently. Time is of the essence and free speech/due process are on the line. The clock is ticking. Please immediately send out petitions and publicize the cause, to get proactivity going with the greater American public. This is a fundamentally American cause, not a partisan or left-wing/right-wing matter. It affects everybody, even those not posting to the Internet.

Thank you.

Leave Our Civil Rights alone !

The Bush government continues its war on american citizens by dividing and stripping our civil rights for the promise of security from terrorists. Under the Bush administration, anyone that is not making 100,00 a year, or happens to be a democrat, is targeted for wiretapping and illegal harrassment.  S.1959 is a trap against the publics willingness to protest. We, the People want accountability and true justice. S.1959 MUST be stopped so that all americans can prosper, not just the elite ceo's that think they can buy political control. S.1959 is a BAD, BAD peice of legislation against our freedoms and liberties.

MoveOn.org

would do well to join the NLG, ACLU, CCR and SALT and millions of Americans in opposing the passage of this very dangerous bill. Would go a little way towards correcting the perception that they're a "left gatekeeper"- unless, of course, that's what they are.

freedom

The price we pay for freedom is eternal vigilance.  The RSPCA and the Abolitionists learned this in the nineteenth century.

As a conservative I oppose violation of the Constitution, from  the illegal wars to arresting abortion protestors.  I oppose Socialism and Fascism. I oppose federal tax subisidies for corporations, especially the bailout of several airlines after 9/11.

I support freedom of speech, freedom to make money.  With freedom comes responsibility.  Those opposed to the P.A.T.R.I.O.T. Act, including myself, must assume the burden of protecting this nation against terrorism.
