I) www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/03/22/AR2007032201882_pf.html National Security Letters are FBI-issued subpoenas for internet, phone, medical and other records of suspected “terrorists”, carrying gag orders with 5-year jail sentences for disclosing receipt of an NSL. Former FBI agent Mike German wrote to ACLU members that between 2003-2005, 153,000 NSL’s were issued (that’s 993 per week), about 50% to American citizens, and only ONE terrorist was caught since 9-11 using these NSL's. Since NSL’s are being overly-used by the FBI, so much that even Congress and the ACLU don’t know the extent of the abuses, how can we trust that this bill would not be similarly misused/abused?

Tianenmen Square should be a lesson to all of us: Dictatorships routinely squelch dissent and “radical thought” in order to protect the politicians, special interests, power, secrets (wrong-doings) and their economic strangle-hold. The “violent radicalization and home-grown terrorism” is not coming from “forceful” or violent protestors: Instead, it is now about to come from OUR government itself. Just as our founding fathers experienced first-hand, fled their country to avoid, and drafted the U.S. Constitution to prevent.

Could this bill be the precursor to declaring martial law and calling off the next election? After all, the strike on Iran is “coincidentally” being timed just before the next election, and to “legalize” the squelching of dissent would enable the enforcement of martial law, ie. military ammunition against the American people. Perhaps that’s also why it would be a “terrorist” act to “Coerce the government“, ie. to expose and object to their wrong-doings (in letters to the editor, et al).

FORTUNATELY FOR US, THERE IS A CONGRESSIONAL RECESS COMING UP, SO THERE IS TIME TO ORGANIZE. PLEASE WRITE YOUR FAVORED GRASSROOTS ORGANIZATION, USING THE “CONTACT” BUTTON ON THEIR WEBSITE, AND URGE THEM TO GET INVOLVED IN TOPPLING THIS BILL BY E-MAILING PETITIONS, AND ASKING LAWMAKERS TO PROMISE A FILIBUSTER SHOULD THE BILL PASS THE SENATE.

PLEASE ALSO WRITE YOUR LOCAL CITY COUNCILS AND COUNTY SUPERVISORS, ASKING THEM TO DRAFT A RESOLUTION AGAINST THIS ACT. AND DON'T FORGET THAT LETTERS TO THE EDITOR ARE THE MOST-READ PAGES IN THE NEWSPAPER, BEING A VERY GOOD PUBLIC OUTREACH TOOL!

PLEASE CALL YOUR SENATOR AND URGE THEM TO VOTE “NO” ON S.1959, AND TO PROMISE TO FILIBUSTER IT IF IT PASSES. PLEASE ALSO REMIND YOUR SENATOR THAT S/HE TOOK AN OATH OF OFFICE TO UPHOLD, PROTECT AND DEFEND THE CONSTITUTION, FOR WHICH WE *PAY* THEM WITH OUR TAX DOLLARS. LET POLITICIANS KNOW THAT THEY WILL BE OUT OF A JOB IF THEY PASS THIS BILL, WHILE YOU STILL HAVE THE FREEDOM TO SAY IT! Politicians want to be re-elected: The more people call in, the better the chances of toppling this bill. Please spread word far and wide! Thank you.

This quote summarizes the nature of my concerns and the content of personal experiences which stir my activism: "Necessity is the plea for every infringement on human freedom. It is the argument of tyrants; it is the creed of slaves". --Paul (more...)
