“The assassination of Abdel Saddam Hussein by US forces mafia will not discourage the determination of the Iraq Freedom Congress and will be a new impetus to continue the struggle to rid the Iraqi society from all types of terrorists. They murdered Abdelhussein, but his spirit, ambitious aspirations, and bravery for building Iraq that is secular, humanitarian, and free from occupation and sectarian gangs, will be firmly in the hearts of freedom lovers.” -- From a statement by the Iraq Freedom Congress on the death of Abdel-Hussein Saddam, leader of the IFC Safety Force, July 8, 2007

Thanks so much for your informative, if tragic, article. I had never heard of the organization, didn't know it existed, and deeply regret the killing by the U.S. military.

Wouldn't the U.S. want a peaceful Iraq? It would be like Saudi Arabia or the Gulf States, a reliable source of oil for the United States. This group according to your article is the declared enemy of the United States.

If the U.S. wanted a peaceful Iraq, and was truly fighting a war against Islamic fundamentalists, then a rapprochement with the secular Baathist regime under Saddam Hussein would have led to the best strategic results. It isn't as if the U.S. had not previously dealt with ruthless dictators to obtain far less worthy goals than defeating Al Queda.

How much longer will this go on? The story you report is one of people trying to make sense out of chaos, reason with the whirlwind of war. The picture brought a touch of humanity to the whole situation. It's as though he's waving goodbye.
