Joan Brunwasser is a co-founder of Citizens for Election Reform (CER) which exists for the sole purpose of raising the public awareness of the critical need for election reform. We aim to restore fair, accurate, transparent, secure elections where votes are cast in private and counted in public. Electronic (computerized) voting systems are simply antithetical to democratic principles.

CER set up a lending library to achieve the widespread distribution of the DVD Invisible Ballots: A temptation for electronic vote fraud. Within eighteen months, the project had distributed over 3200 copies across the country and beyond. CER now concentrates on group showings, OpEd pieces, articles, reviews, interviews, discussion sessions, networking, conferences, anything that promotes awareness of this critical problem. Our Votes Must Count

I have been sending the following message (which I wrote and sometimes revise to fit the situation) to every newspaper I can find that runs an article on using voting machines. I urge every concerned citizen to do the same. (You might also mention the book. --- I have no connection to the book. I just now read the review here.)

Electronic voting machines can be programmed to record a vote for one candidate and give a paper receipt showing a vote for the other candidate. We must insist on paper ballots and hand counting.

We must confront this reality -- that past elections were fixed, and the 2006 elections are just as vulnerable. These findings deserve front-page treatment. Electronic voting machine failure must have prominent and continual coverage. The people must address the serious ... catastrophic... issue of unreliable, unsecure and unverifiable voting machines. Two presidential elections have been stolen. If this trend continues America will be an empire not a democracy.

Electronic voting machines can be reprogrammed to flip votes with one minute of access anywhere from the elections officials' offices to the machine at any voting location.Touch screen voting machines and optical scanners are both corruptible. Experts found that an attacker could tamper with the software before election day or even on the day of the election with a commonly used handheld device.

Lay blame where it belongs

Not a single investigation of any weight, not a continuing outcry by elected official or by a consortium of the electorate, no continued demand for investigations outside of a few blogs and forii. Can you say ennui?

The oil corporations are realising profits of $13,000 a minute, yup thats correct! Ten billion a quarter in profits which are basically thefts from us all, yet noone seems upset by this either. Can you say complacency?

The death of democracy will come through the inaction and alienation of the voters, as it seems to be doing now.

I knew that 2004 was stolen that night

Proving it in a court of law would have been another thing entirely. I watched those numbers flip late on election night, sitting in a friends house in Atlanta, Georgia. We both knew it. Like everyone I knew we were following the exit polls and the popular vote like hawks.

There is no way in hell that George W Bush won the election of 2004, not even with a vote of 5 to 4. I, personally, know about thirty people who had not voted since Bobby Kennedy was shot, who were the first in line and early voting in 2004. In all of my years, I had not seen the kind of passionate voting I saw in 2004 since, well, not ever.

The bad news is, the Rethugs are going to try to do it again. They have no choice. They cannot run the risk of Democrats with Subpoena power. The only question is, what are we prepared to do about it, because we have a choice. Allow this to happen again and give away what people have bled and died and killed for; representative self-government, by the people and for the people; as set forth in the Bill of Rights and the Constitution

I am currently reading Ron Sunskind's book, One Percent Doctrine. I highly reccommend it, by the way.

After reading half the book last night, and seeing this post this morning, it struck me; We voters should have a One Percent Doctrine of our own. While Cheney and the Busiites kept theirs' quiet, we should make ours known far and wide.

Cheney's doctrine, which is apparently driving the "war on terror," said, essentially, if there was even a one percent chance that a country had WMD and a motive to use them, we would flatten the place. Evidence did not matter, only our action mattered.

We should have a similar doctrine. If there is even a one percent chance that one election this November has been manipulated with electioneering and dirty tricks or with those Democracy stealing EVMs, we are going to do our best to shut down every major city in America. We will all come down with a raging case of the red, white and blue flu which may keep us out of work for days, or even weeks.

We will become so frustrated that it will make us all higly accident prone, resulting in us being house bound for a while.

For some of us the cognitve dissonance will be such that we may go a little nutz for awhile; start spray painting everything in sight with the news: There has been a completed coup in this nation, Democracy is dead in America. Long live the new Revolution.

Consume nothing or as little as possible for 7 days.

Shut this country down. Nothing less will get the attention of this ADHD nation.

My personal doctrine: It is either Revolution or leaving for me, if there is even a one percent chance. I was born free and I will die the same way, one way or another.

Immoral is the word you want

Those who steal elections through rigged electronic machines and other voter fraud techniques undermine our democracy. They are not unintelligent, in fact they are very organized and clever. Do YOU think it is in our best interest to live in a country where our votes do not count? If no, listen to the evidence. If yes, then I hope you are in the minority of citizens in this country. In fact, I am sure you are.

actually the leverage is very simple

Voting officials are usually locals and they cannot enjoy the protection of the Govt. As such there should be local ordonances that if a fraud is proven the appropriate voting official is banned from the city and community and has to leave in a matter of days.
