Today, Monday October 22, the DRC army said it had resumed control of an eastern town seized by rebel forces over the weekend and the heavy fighting between the two sides had ended.
Forces loyal to renegade general Laurent Nkunda confirmed the clashes in the eastern Nord-Kivu region that prompted thousands of people to flee their homes Sunday was over, and said they were waiting to hear about possible talks, MONUC said.
Nkunda’s forces had also briefly cut access to a key road late Saturday, before being repelled by a force from MONUC.
The temporary cease in hostilities prompted the expected posturing about who killed whom and how many soldiers had died.
The army said Sunday that two of its soldiers had died, while Nkunda's men claimed to have killed dozens of troops.

Lower Ninth Ward New Orleans Today © G. Nienaber
Louisiana might be interesting. Visit the lower ninth ward here in New Orleans and the homeless ask, “Are we still part of the United States?”
The weak, the needy, the poor, and the disposessed know no international boundaries. So, writers try to describe the misery as best they can, babies cry, mothers and fathers find shelter in the bush of DRC, and FEMA trailers and flooded homes house the god-forsaken in the ninth ward.
