The Constitution was based not only on the writings of Europeans like John Locke and ancient Greek systems of government, but also on the Iroquois Confederacy's constitution and system of checks and balances. The Iroquois respected nature. And true Evangelical Christians are now some of the biggest defenders of nature, because they understand that the Bible requires us to be good stewards of creation. So before you ridicule those who respect nature, I invite you to do investigate what our "founders" really thought about the subject. What About Tradition? On the other hand, you might think that I'm anti-tradition, since I've been cheerleading for a bold future. I'm not. Indeed, I would argue that big thinking and high-technology can help strengthen the ability to keep our traditions. Here's just one example . . . Can the best traditions and ethics of conservatism really be practiced in the middle of resource wars? Remember the truism that "the first casualty of war is the truth". How can conservatives be truthful when deceit is being practiced in our names?
On the other hand, with enough high-technology solutions grounded in traditional values, the desperation caused by resource wars would be reduced, allowing us to follow our values and live ethically.
Thinking Bigger
We need to think BIGGER. If we focus on bringing about the future, and figure out what we really want to DO with all of the futuristic technologies, we can create something a lot better.
By thinking bigger, we will get past the seemingly overwhelming problems which we currently have (oil, water scarcity, resource wars, pollution, etc.) and -- with access to higher technologies and more energy than we currently have -- we could see that the insurmountable problems we currently have are really small problems created by failure of imagination and thinking too small.
Let's think about what we as a people really want. And then let's think big and go for it.
It just might save the world.
