An Unholy Alliance: The Marriage of the Political and Religious Right

One of the most pernicious aspects of this political/religious coalition is that it frames each challenge as a battle between good and evil, Christ and Anti-Christ. There is no arguing with one who is convinced that God is on his side---and Satan is on the other. Democracy and religion are both the losers.

America, having succumbed to fear and intolerance, is being propelled by the delusion of moral certitude. We have come to identify intractability with integrity, and arrogance with principle.

To counter the tyranny of even the best-intentioned, our nation depends on a strong democratic and secular government.

Our Founders held that religion is a personal affair between the individual and God---however we may conceive that ultimate source. It is not a matter of national policy.

Morals result from spiritual insight, not government mandate. Truth lies not in what we believe, or profess to believe, but in how we behave.

A nation that embraces the spirit of all religions---liberty, peace, justice, and charity; free of sectarian trappings, dogma, and prejudice---will not only be a good nation; it will be a democratic one.

How true

"I don't want to see religious bigotry in any form. It would disturb me if there was a wedding between the religious fundamentalists and the political right. The hard right has no interest in religion except to manipulate it."

Rev. Billy Graham, Parade, 1981 February 1, 1981

If you haven't already, check out "Thy Kingdom Come" by Randall Balmer. It has a wonderful chapter of how the Baptists have morphed from being champions of church-state separation to becoming theocrats. Nice piece. Thanks.

pain in the ass

I like your website and I am in sympathy with its content. However, I find your process of signing up yadda yadda yadda in order to send a comment to an author to be a real pain in the ass, and I have decided to abandon my effort to send a comment to the author of "Donald Archer: An Unholy Alliance: . . . ." Page after page of "do this-do that" and still I could never get to the email page. Ntxt time, and this of course, I won't bother. Sorry.

For centuries polititians and others have been using religion as a tool to create blind obediance in a large group of people. Republicans need blind obediant people to vote for them so they can remain in office as they carry out their plans to help out multinational corporations and screw over the middle class. Faith based initiatives and the preaching of family values by republicans is just a scam to hide what they are really all about. If you look at everything George Bush and the republican congress has done since he was elected every bill passed was a great benefit for corporations, not one thing was done for the middle class. The late preacher Jim Jones knew religion was powerful tool for mass submission and so do the republicans.
