THE HONORABLE EDWARD M. KENNEDY (D-MASSACHUSETTS): Thank you Mr. Chairman, Mr. Gonzales... Mr. Gonzales, we're here because we need to get to the truth of what happened. A month ago at a press conference, you said you never went jogging with disgraced Congressman Mark Foley. Today, you told us that you did go jogging with Mark Foley on November 27. How do you reconcile those differences?
GONZALES: Senator, and as I said, I made those statements before I went back and looked at the calendar. But afterwards I went back and looked at the calendar, and I studied it, and I picked it up and turned it around in my hands, and realized that I had in fact gone for that jog with Mark Foley.
(Time Lapse)
THE SORT OF HONORABLE (BUT NOT REALLY) ORRIN G. HATCH (R-UTAH): Mr. Gonzales, do you think you are a good man?
GONZALES: Yes.
HATCH: Do you think you're a great man?
GONZALES: Yes.
HATCH: I'm a really great senator, as you know, and one thing I particularly care about is bashing Democrats. Do you think these Democrats are traipsing around on a political witch hunt?
GONZALES: Yes.
HATCH: No further questions.
(Time lapse)
THE HONORABLE RICHARD J. DURBIN (D-ILLINOIS): What was your role in forming the list of prosecutors that were fired?
GONZALES: Senator, I did not. Look, I do not recall whether or not in my mind those instances were recalled...
DURBIN: Next question, who formed the list of prosecutors?
GONZALES: Senator, again, I'm not going to speak to recollections I can't recall, I can only voice that in my mind I think...
DURBIN: Were you in an office meeting with President Bush and Karl Rove on October 31st.
