Through this program of action we address ourselves to putting our own national house in order and making income balance outgo. Our international trade relations, though vastly important, are in point of time and necessity secondary to the establishment of a sound national economy. I favor as a practical policy the putting of first things first. I shall spare no effort to restore world trade by international economic readjustment, but the emergency at home cannot wait on that accomplishment. What does the current President say about this? "We have seen our vulnerability - and we have seen its deepest source. For as long as whole regions of the world simmer in resentment and tyranny - prone to ideologies that feed hatred and excuse murder - violence will gather, and multiply in destructive power, and cross the most defended borders, and raise a mortal threat. There is only one force of history that can break the reign of hatred and resentment, and expose the pretensions of tyrants, and reward the hopes of the decent and tolerant, and that is the force of human freedom." Read it time and again there is not one word of aid or assistance to the average American, not one.
What does Roosevelt Offer us?
"In the field of world policy I would dedicate this Nation to the policy of the good neighbor—the neighbor who resolutely respects himself and, because he does so, respects the rights of others—the neighbor who respects his obligations and respects the sanctity of his agreements in and with a world of neighbors."
Roosevelt warned the situation might present itself where he would work outside of constitutional norms but unlike Bush he warns before the fact not after the fact.
The programs are not discovered by The New York Times or leaked by disgruntled officials but explained for all to understand,
"It is to be hoped that the normal balance of executive and legislative authority may be wholly adequate to meet the unprecedented task before us. But it may be that an unprecedented demand and need for undelayed action may call for temporary departure from that normal balance of public procedure.
"I am prepared under my constitutional duty to recommend the measures that a stricken nation in the midst of a stricken world may require. These measures, or such other measures as the Congress may build out of its experience and wisdom, I shall seek, within my constitutional authority, to bring to speedy adoption.
But in the event that the Congress shall fail to take one of these two courses, and in the event that the national emergency is still critical, I shall not evade the clear course of duty that will then confront me. I shall ask the Congress for the one remaining instrument to meet the crisis—broad Executive power to wage a war against the emergency, as great as the power that would be given to me if we were in fact invaded by a foreign foe."
This is a founding document of the Democratic Party, and it goes ignored. Not by just average people for it has been intentionally ignored by curriculums which treat it as a mere blip on a time line rather than a possible civil war averted. Who are these people? Those in positions of leadership, who desire high office, do they reflect the positions laid out in this document are they more like Bush? Or Roosevelt?
Do they condemn the corporations and moneychangers or do they cozy up to them? Do the stand tall and certain in their positions? Or are they warm and fuzzy?
Do they call for a more just society? Or just more?
Recently Cindy Sheehan announced she was considering running as an independent against Nancy Pelosi. Sheehan stressed that it was due to Pelosi’s inaction and unwillingness to impeach the President. Pelosi has stated that impeachment is off the table totally disregarding the electorate and Roosevelt’s call, "This Nation asks for action, and action now." So is Sheehan leaving the Democratic Party? Or is the Democratic Party leaving her and all of us, is Cindy marching the wrong way? Or is Cindy standing still and it’s the party that’s marching away?
