One of my favorite professional football players is Spencer Tillman. I took a group of students to visit The University of Oklahoma and tour the football stadium. Spencer had been notified which professional team had picked him up that day. He talked to all of our students and was telling our kids how important education is as he signed autographs, when a television crew showed up. So, ... our students were part of one of his most memorial days.
The thing about guys like Spencer, Barry Sanders, and Troy Aikman, is they are the consummate verbal professionals. No, "we was" or "they was" or "you was." And certainly no "You know." Or "You know what I mean." Spencer and Barry took their educational opportunities seriously. And I defy anyone to find grammatical errors in Tillman's color commentating this fall season. Believe me, he will be on the tube.
We have visited too many of my school kids who were in Oklahoma Children's Hospital where Aikman's helmets leads to The Troy Aikman Center, where patients can do crafts and arts and play with the computer. Of course, all of them have to get a picture of themselves inside the huge, 8 ft. tall Cowboy helmet.
I believe all universities should weed out their grammar-challenged students and force them to enroll in a proper speech class. We have Lou Dobbs demanding all immigrants must learn English. Maybe he could start first with our politicians and sports icons before he slam-dunks Mexican, looking for monetary relief "... you know what I mean." Listen to J. C. Watts' commentaries.
"J. C., get together with Spencer and learn something about speech."
