Nirenberg then turned his attention to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. "Open hearings now. Nancy, you have nothing to protect in the ratings that Congress now has. They are lower than the President's. They are lower than the President's because the people voted for change and have gotten more of the same. We have to change what is happening in Washington and the only way we can do it is by having the courage to open those hearings. Let us see the truth for what it is and let's hold Bush and Cheney accountable in the only way that is given to us by the Constitution." As the crowd roared, John Nirenberg did something unexpected, he calmed them and led them on a solemn march to Independence Hall for a moment of reflective silence.

Between jobs, passions are motorcycles, music, and green-tech

Rock on, march strong!

I think it's pretty refreshing to see that more and more people are starting to really think about and hence give a damn about our Constitution, rather than being primarily concerned with how much money they can cram in their pockets etc. However you spell it, the ugly circumstances that've led up to Iraq call upon EVERYONE that's even THINKING about casting a ballot to grab down the old 'G.D. piece of paper' and give it a careful and thorough read. The oil moguls have led us down the garden path for the sake of their profit margins for long enough, reform is in order, if impeachment should not be successful, which I hope it will, but a close second would be to see Ron Paul in office. Reform!

impeachment

Many years ago,. when some of us (incouding Kucinich) called for impeachment, the mainstream media thought we were lunatics--as is the wont of mainstream media to label dissenters lunatics. But, the evidence has become so overwhelming that even the MSM has started to call for impeachment--about four years too late, though. Our focus should be to keep the fires going--and to make sure this Democrat-led Congress fully understands that impeachment should NOT be off the table. This Congress needs to continue to do little to show us that neither party deserves the respect of the people.

So.Jersey Impeach is a leader in the impeachment movement. We need more leaders like Cheryl--and fewer like we have populating the Congress.

Impeachment

In 1973, I had a bumper sticker from the SW Wis. Coalition for Impeachment that as a substitute rural mail carrier, I had to cover during my route.  At the time, I thought Nixon was the worst president America has ever had and then, he probably was.  Agnew wisely resigned as did Tricky Dick.  But it's clear now that Bush/Cheney make Nixon/Agnew look like choirboys.  Cheney, then Bush, should be impeached, tried in the Senate and if convicted, summarily removed from office after which they should both be remanded to the Hague and procesuted for crimes against humanity.

Franklin may have been mistaken in preferring the turkey to the bald eagle as our national bird, but he's dead right that our republic is in desparate need of concerted action to keep it healthy.  As Jefferson implied, America needs an occasional blood transfusion to maintain it.

Good Luck, and Keep the Pressure On

As the topic is how to keep our Republic, it might be instructive to review what happened to those who gave us this Republic, the people who challenged their government, the British Monarchy, and signed the Declaration of Independence. See "What Happened to the Signers...": http://www.save-a-patriot.org/files/view/1776paid.html

Next, consider Pelosi's selection as a David A. Morse lecturer and listen to her suck up to the CFR, March 7, 2003: http://www.godlikeproductions.com/forum1/message305267/pg1

Learn about David Morse here:

http://www.cfr.org/project/122/david_a_morse_lecture_series.html

Now tell me, does Pelosi truly have the loyalty to the Constitution and personal courage to stand against Bush II and company???

But, good luck and keep the pressure on. Maybe the public will eventually get a clue before it is too late.

Re: "Keeping the Republic"

Thank you Ms. Wright for that brilliantly written article.

I also attended the very peaceful and productive Impeachment rally last Sunday on Independence Mall. And I must say, it was a pleasure meeting and shaking the hand of John Nirenberg, a humble man and a true Patriot, who cares so deeply about the well being of his country's Constitution, now in tatters, he's willing to endure the grueling walk from Boston to Washington, DC in an attempt to put Impeachment back upon the table and to perhaps rid our country of this pernicious and treasonous cabal occupying the White House. Our Founding Fathers would indeed be proud of you.

Sadly, not a single television news reporter from Philly had the courage to show up and cover this important event. This is an outrage! And those four loyalists you spoke of, the ones which author and activist Dave Lindorff who attempted to hand a pocket copy of the Constitution to? (a rather interesting ordeal) These vociferous men are with the radical group Gathering of Eagles, who's mantra is "Let our troops win." This group is basically joined at the hip with Freedom's Watch, an advocacy group supportive of the Bush administration's positions in the War on Terror.
Here is a list of donors:
  • Bradley A. Blakeman (president, a former deputy assistant to George W. Bush).
  • Ari Fleischer (board member, former Bush press secretary).
  • Matthew Brooks (board member, executive director of the Republican Jewish Coalition).
  • Mel Sembler (donor, former ambassador to Italy who helped finance the 2000 Florida recount battle).
  • John Templeton Jr. (donor, board member of the Templeton Growth Fund and financier of Let Freedom Ring).
  • Sheldon Adelson (donor, CEO Las Vegas Sands Corporation and the third-richest American in Forbes magazine's rankings last year).
  • Kevin E. Moley (donor, former U.S. ambassador to international organizations in Geneva, and a senior adviser to Dick Cheney during the 2000 campaign).
  • Howard Leach (donor, CEO Leach Capital and former ambassador to France who also helped fund the Florida Recount).
  • Anthony Gioia (donor, head of Gioia Management and former ambassador to Malta).
  • Richard Fox (donor, co-founder of the Republican Jewish Coalition).
  • Gary Erlbaum (donor, owner of Greentree Properties).

And one must indeed wonder what the founders would have done with all of these henchmen?

GOE

Thanks Munich (others too) for sharing your thoughts.

That's funny about Dave and the pocket Constitution. I saw them going back and forth from a distance, but hadn't realized he was trying to give them a Constitution. That's great. Yea, I know all too well about the Gathering of Eagles. I walked through their gauntlet at the March on the Pentagon. They were violent - verbally and physically. Spit at the feet of an 84-year-old WWII vet and called him a traitor for attending the rally. Grabbed and ripped people's signs. Told a 10-year-old boy who also traveled with us that his mother was a whore. real swell guys. another rally they ripped up the photograph of the son of Carlos Arrendondo (a Gold Star father) that he carried with him. In fact, one of them (who was there Sunday) was involved in an assault on Carlos that followed when Carlos tried to retrieve the picture. A few days later, the guy had breakfast with George Bush. That's why I call them henchmen. They're Bush's henchmen.

That said...other than being a nuisance at the rally Sunday, I think their presence actually helped galvanize our efforts. Any sane person can see right through them and realize who the real patriots were that day. Also, they've no impact on our impeachment movement. The struggle is between us and the democratic leadership. Keep the pressure on.

Republic

The Founders created a Republic but not for we the people. They created a Republic for the aristocrats not for the benefit of the lower classes.

We need true Democracy not the fake Democracy of a Republic.
