As further proof that there’s “an anti-Christian bias” out there, King and various bloggers angrily cite two other resolutions passed by the 110th Congress, both, ahem, unanimously. In October, it honored, for some reason, Diwali, the Hindu Festival of Light. And in September, Congress conveyed “respect to Muslims in the United States and throughout the world” on the occasion of Ramadan, a resolution that actually had a valid point: to demonstrate solidarity with Muslims “during this time of conflict” and in light of post-9/11 bigotry and violence against Arab-Americans.
But in a nation as divided and combative as this one, any largess, however modest, must generate backlash. When people with wealth and power want to feel like the underdog, the castrated bete noire they sic on themselves is called political correctness. Well, fine, but say what you mean:
Whereas uninsured children should be encouraged to get their own health insurance; and whereas any war is justified as long as we start it; and whereas torture, if it saves the day in movie-thriller reality (rescuing Manhattan or whatever), then it’s forever OK for us to use as long as we call it something else; and whereas the world is going to hell in a handbasket anyway (so what’s wrong with global warming?) . . .
Happy holidays.
