Very well said!

I was chock in the middle of the 2000 election theft and was appointed one of many Democratic observers to the recounts in Pinellas County.

This event turned me from merely a concerned citizen to a political junkie. I suspect it did the same for many and so I conclude that while the Rethuglicans got what they wanted THAT day, the blowback from what they did will haunt them for decades in terms of energized Democratic opponents.

What Blowback?

They simply moved their crimes to Ohio in 2004. Of course there were other states which had illegal activities; i.e., Texas, Florida (again), to name a few, but the focus was on Ohio. I took part in observing the recount in Highland county. The 3% "random" ballots had been counted the week before we got there. When pointing out this was to be randomly picked we were told that Ken Blackwell, Bush's campaign leader in the state and Secretary of State, told them to do it that way. When the hand count did not come out correctly and should have invoked a full counting of all ballots the computer guy from Triad, the company which which programmed the computer to count the ballots, explained why the difference occurred. He also mentioned he had been in the week before to "fix" a machine.

So, blowback is not a concern to this criminal bunch. Underlings in Ohio's election process have gone to jail as a result of illegalities, but the nation has suffered 4 more years of thugs in charge. They simply learn new tactics and will move their "game" to other states with each election. The 2008 election, if there is one, will focus on maybe Pennsylvania.

Yes, but beware of what may come first.

While I agree that it all comes out in the end and justice will prevail somewhere down the line, my concern is that as Bush/Cheney/Rove/ and the rest of their crew get cornered, they will attack -- Iran could be their excuse to impliment measures they've been setting up through a series of Executive Orders that increase Presidential power.

That could include the indefinite postponement of the next Presidential election.

The "Colonel"?

Who was the colonel that the republithug protestors referred to in the elevator scene in the movie? While this program might not have included everything, it still opened a lot of eyes to what Bush would do to win. It was also a "preview of coming attractions" for the next 8 years of the Bush crime families' administration.

There is one more huge flaw ...

The fact that nothing has been done to fix our totally flawed election system might be the biggest telling point of just what a completely fake democracy we live in.

So what, they steal elections? So what if they start illegal wars? So what they murder one-million people? So what ... if nothing is done to fix the problem what good is it to know about it? We know they stole the election - so what? We know they killed 3,000+ on 9/11 - so what? We know they lied us into wars - so what? We know they wire-tap - so what? We know a lot of things that the people, courts, or congress aren't doing a damn thing about - so what?

Not only has nothing been done to fix many of these problems, they've gotten worse. I can envision the same massive election fraud in this election. Since accountability is something only found in a dictionary now, I see no reason why any number of catastrophes should happen to ensure that these cretins never get held accountable for their treasonous actions. An attack on Iran, even the much talked about this week of assassination, nothing is beneath these putrid scum-bags. The Mafia has more morals than these criminals.

The Real Results

Here is the website of the project by the National Opinion Research Center, which was commissioned by the Media Consortium to finish the vote count. I admit I'm not finding a simple answer here, but I had a strange experience in looking for this information. My computer froze on one website, and on another, the only way I could get it to finish loading was to go back and go to the cached version. Hmmmm, verrrrrrrrry interrrrressstttting. . .

I am new to this blog and am simply astounded by the depth of conviction posted here.

Did you know there is a 911 conspiracy theory book advertised here? Oh, what's that? You did know? Then, never mind.

I am the first to admit that I do not have the answers to all of life's issues, but I do know these two things:

1) Quoting Micheal Moore on anything just makes you look...foolish.

But, what do I know? I thought that Ann Coulter was sexy before I realized that she is psychotic.

2) Referring to a state as Red or Blue is not only a media-driven devisive tool, it is actually incorrect. I looked at Google-earth. And I study geology. I have never-not once-encounted a state with only one primary color.

Oh, wait...Oklahoma actually is Red. My bad. Damn oxidation is making me look bad.

A Post Script

On the positive side, I do want to give the filmmakers credit for showing the issue of the voter list purged of thousands of voters deliberately by Katharine Harris directing the data research company to use too wide definitions for the names of supposed felons included.

Too bad proper credit wasn't given to Greg Palast for this discovery. An even larger explanation of the sad truth is in his book The Best Democracy Money Can Buy, which includes the unwillingness of the press to go with this extremely important story before the vote was certified.

Another interesting inclusion was the call for "Roger Stone" when it was time to bring on the thugs. Too bad so few people know that it was that same Roger Stone who dug up the dirt on Elliot Spitzer and handed it to the FBI to bring down someone who was a problem for many in industry.

[There are also many who believe that Roger Stone was the unidentified man who gave the not-quite-real National Guard memos to Retired Lt. Colonel Bill Burkett (who had been present in the Texas Air Guard office to overhear Governor Bush's Chief of Staff, Joe Allbaugh -- yes, that crew cut guy in "Recount" on Bush's team -- tell the General to make sure there would be nothing embarrassing in the Governor's military records). This came after Burkett appeared on television with James Moore -- co-author of Bush's Brain -- in early 2004 to tell the story of his experience in that Texas Air Guard office. When Burkett eventually turned the documents over to Dan Rather and his team, the bait nabbed two of Bush's foes. As for Joe Allbaugh, he was appointed by Mr. Bush to lead FEMA. But Allbaugh smelled profit early on and quit the White House early on to create a business out of facilitating government contracts in the Middle East.]

Yep, too bad there wasn't an epilogue that put all these characters in perspective.

Better movie than I expected.

According to wikipedia, the media study after the election found that Bush won according to 5 sets of standards and Gore won according to 4. Ironically, each lost according to the standard that they themselves espoused. The citation appeared to be the study itself which appeared too extensive for me to want to read myself.

I just watched this and was shocked by how poorly it's been recieved by the left and the right! I am a left leaning Libertarian who initially prefered Bush and quickly learned to regret it. I think America and indeed the world would have been better off if Gore had won but have always believed that they got it right. I've even had a very low opinion of how Gore & the democrats handled it and find claims that the election was fixed to be purely obnoxious so I assumed I'd dislike the movie.

And yet, I thought that it was an extremely fair and human portrayal to both sides. It seemed that the producers tried to be as accurate as possible (which is so rare in movies; one critic cited this as their biggest critique that it didn't bend the facts enough for hollywood). It also seemed to hit almost every point that I'd have expected either side would want to site.

This film has changed my opinion of the entire process and I expected that this would finally bring some degree of mutual understanding on this divisive issue but I guess I was wrong.

The best part of the film was Bush's victory speach where he pledges himself to be the president of all americans including those who voted for Gore. Sounds odd these days, doesn't it considering how he explicitely says the exact opposite now. Now suddenly he's only got to represent the interests of those who voted for him. And yet even most of them can't stand him any more.
