We've seen normal people -- summoned by destructive leaders to supposedly righteous causes-- slaughter their neighbors in Bosnia and Rwanda,. Why should it be out of bounds to imagine that an American leader could bring out of his followers, collectively, the worst of their potentialities?

Our dominant religion declares that we are all sinners. So why should it be implausible that a political force might gain its fuel from tapping into that sinful side?

That old-time radio show used to ask, “Who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of men?” The answer, these days, seems to be: I don't want to know.

Andrew Bard Schmookler has just launched his website – nonesoblind.org —devoted to understanding the roots of America's present moral crisis and the means by which the urgent challenge of this dangerous moment can be met. Dr. Schmookler is also the author of such books as The Parable of the Tribes: The Problem of Power in Social Evolution (SUNY Press) and Debating the Good Society: A Quest to Bridge America's Moral Divide (M.I.T. Press). He also conducts regular talk-radio conversations in both red and blue states. Schmookler can be reached at andythebard@comcast.net
