That voting system from Ploughshares is quite similar in some ways to the Australian polling system for electing national leaders—and it is similar to the system used by college coaches and sports journalists to choose national champions in the Heisman and to rank college athletic teams during the regular sports’ seasons.
A voter simply ranks the candidate or party (or in Ploughshare’s case: organization) by first choice, second choice, etc. by voting for that party more often and/or sending more money to the party ( or organization,) or candidate.
This type of voting system not only allows voters to put money where they want to see it go, but enables them to vote for more than one candidate, i.e. to spread their support among several good great candidates simultaneously.
REALITY PROGRESSIVE PROGRAM
However, this REALITY PROGRESSIVE PROGRAM would set out to turn the 2008 Primary system on its head.
First of all, the candidates in the first stage of this campaign (starting in September 2007) would seek to run without spending any money—any money at all—at least no money of their own.
They would simply focus on platform creation
These initial candidates, as is done in most reality show compositions, will try to get votes on line by first presenting a platform and editing it. Meanwhile, they will either simply writing on-line or running around the country by foot or on an old bicycle in order to get people’s support and attention.
Only in later stages would the candidates be allowed to actually try to raise money.
One of the later stages would certainly include stages of wooing co-runners for the progressive championship—with eyes to running for governor slots or for the presidency as a Progressive in 2008. (An alternative set of contests could and should be run for Senate and Representative seats in Washington around the country.
