Constitutional 'Originalists' Mum On Presidential Signing Statements

What Dubya has been doing by circumventing the bill-passing process is inventing the rules as he goes along, completely in violation of the Constitution. Even BushCo's regressive enablers and spinmeisters in the media are unable to provide any legal justification for these actions. The best Secretary of Lies Tony '2500 is just a number' Snow can do is say, 'well, other presidents did it, so there'. This is a common regressive line of argument. They use it to justify their lies and their...lies, and more, well, lies.

Regressives' unwillingness or sheer inability to appreciate depth and nuance prevents them from supposing that we should have bitch-slapped those other Presidents for their behavior, too, not let their illegal acts justify further illegal acts. But now it's their boy breaking the law so they swing into whatever-it-takes mode.

Another popular, but equally bogus rationale, is that somehow, like every other dangerous action on BushCo's part, signing statements are covered Dubya's having been given the title 'Commander-in-Chief' when he was installed. But since this designation concerns only military action and signing statements, as is all legislative action, a civilian affair, this defense obviously blows.

Naturally, both of these lines of 'reasoning' work splendidly with the Kool-Aid drinking BushCo lovers. And with folks for whom ignorance is like oxygen, you'd expect nothing less.

The bottom line is that Dubya routinely violates the Constitution with impunity and should be indicted and thrown in prison for it. He's a dangerous criminal and the biggest threat to both the country, the world, democracy and liberty. While Constitutional originalists ought to be the vanguard for impeachment based on this alone, they instead add insult to injury by enabling further desecration of America's premier document.
