                                   HAMLET
            Oh god!  No!

                                   GHOST
But soft!  The morning comes and you must know the truth
before I depart....  Napping in my orchard, your uncle poured
poison in my ear.  It flushed into the body of my blood and
in an instant I was deprived of my life, my crown, my wife,
and dispatched with sins still upon my head.  Cut off from
amendments!  Do not tolerate this!  Do not allow a royal bed
to become a couch of incestuous luxury!  Liberty or
            injustice.

                                   HAMLET
            My lord--

                                   GHOST
However you proceed, take no action against your mother.
Leave her to heaven and the thorns of her own conscience.

(Hamlet moves to speak, the Ghost moves
                                   to stop him.)

                                   GHOST (CONT'D)
This is all.  Believe this.  The rest is up to you.  Fare
            thee well prince.

                                   (Exit Ghost.)

                                   HAMLET
Oh angels in heaven!  Oh earth!  Shall I call on hell too?!
Were you an angel or a demon?!  Oh angels in heaven help me!
Angels in heaven help me!  Angels in heaven! Oh earth!  Do
not break a lion's heart!  Do not break my lion's heart, do
not break.  Hold fast.  Hold fast sinews.  Hold fast Hamlet.
From the table of my memory I'll wipe away all trivial and
fond records, all saws of books, all forms, all pressures
past that youth and observation copy.  Thy commandment alone
shall live within the book and volume of my brain, unmixed
            with baser matter.

                                   (Hamlet thinks.)

                                   HAMLET (CONT'D)
Oh Queen!  Oh Queen!  Oh Mother!

                                   (Hamlet thinks.)

                                   HAMLET (CONT'D)
            Claudius.

                                   (Hamlet thinks.)

                                   HAMLET (CONT'D)
What if you're just a fool, and the ghost a demon?  We shall
            see, won't we?

                                   (Enter Horatio and Marcellus.)

                                   HORATIO
            Prince Hamlet!
