McCain, at fourth, with a loss to Edwards, a win over Clinton, and a tie with Obama, for an average loss margin of only 2%, would be by far the strongest general election candidate of the Republicans.

Fifth is Giuliani; sixth is Mitt Romney and seventh is Mike Huckabee. A chart that reflects the candidates’ general election strength follows:

US PRESIDENTIAL GENERAL ELECTION STRENGTH RANKINGS

Rank Candidate Percentage of Wins Average Victory %
#1 John Edwards 100% (4 Wins) Plus 16.5%

#2 Barack Obama 75% (3 Wins, 1 Tie) Plus 8.75%

#3 Hillary Clinton 75% (3 Wins, 1 Loss) Plus 6.25%

#4 John McCain 33% (1 Win, 1 Tie, 1 Loss) Minus 2.0%

#5 Rudy Giuliani 0% (3 Losses) Minus 7.3%

#6 Mitt Romney 0% (3 Losses) Minus 15.3%

#7 Mike Huckabee 0% (3 Losses) Minus 16.6%

Also, today John Edwards was declared the winner by two separate groups of undecided Democratic voters in focus groups sponsored by CNN and Fox.

And finally this from a Hillary supporter:

"I still support Hillary. But Edwards is now my #2. The more you see John Edwards, the more you like him. I don't know if that can be said of the other candidates, particularly the other "Big 2." I'm not saying they aren't likable, but they don't have the same level of compellingness that Edwards has, at least the Edwards we saw debating today.

"After today, I can see a possibility where Edwards could take Iowa. The more people that see that debate, the more his numbers will rise -- it was that good."
