But it does not have to be.
It is the job of this government to see to the interests of its people. I strongly believe that the role of government is to care for its people, not to rule them. But the key here is the needs – immediate and future – of the American people.
I believe the Obama Administration and the 111th Congress must focus on the very real concerns we have at hand right now, leaving the more philosophical and esoteric troubles for others. There is an International Court of Justice which this country has consistently refused to even acknowledge. If we were to recognize this court, which nearly all of our allies embrace, then it would be a natural consequence that the court would initiate whatever proceedings it would find relevant and applicable. The problem would be addressed by an independent and impartial (as impartial as any court can be) judiciary and those responsible brought to justice without the personal involvement of those individuals and entitles here who need, for the good of the nation, to work together.
We have, for far, far too long, stood alone, pretending to be Atlas holding up the world, and holding at arm’s length, until we have some use for them, the rest of the nations in that world.
If Obama truly wishes to become part of the world family of nations, this is one area in which he can step forward and do so while possibly solving one of the most contentious issues of his early tenure.
