On August 22nd rawstory.com , http://rawstory.com/08/news/2009/08/22/gop-rep-right-wing-terrorist/ broke the story and so did the Huffington Post and the Drudge Report. August 24th the story was on MSNBC news, Hardball with Chris Mathews and Keith Oberman.
Another important part of this story happened when a man from the audience stood up to speak at the microphone about energy. A real physical scuffle between and man and a woman happened.
Energy was obviously not what most everyone was there to talk about. But talking about energy did not surprise me because Greenpeace had just exposed a secret memo by Big Oil. The Big Oil memo suggested attending energy rallies in August and even to "piggyback' on other events. "US oil industry's plans are to have oil company employees attend anti-US climate action rallies while masquerading as concerned "Energy Citizens.' (download a PDF copy.)"
So when the man started to speak about energy I was not shocked about what happened next. As soon as the man started to speak, booing from the back of the room started and chants of "health care' began. I could tell the chanters wanted to stay on topic. But then the sounds got different and I stood up to look at the back of the room to see why. There I saw a tall man holding a small woman who appeared to be trying get away from him. She was fighting him off! The police were on it quickly and the two were taken outside. Yes, there were police there.
Violence has begun!
On August 24, the Democratic Central Committee of Shasta County put out a public news release demanding an apology from Wally Herger. Other northern California counties are expressing their concerns as well. http://www.geocities.com/shastacountydemocraticparty/PressReleases.html
As noted in the news release, "Congressman Herger should be ashamed of himself for clouding a legitimate debate about health care reform with praise for a man who proclaimed himself a "proud right-wing terrorist,'" said Butte County Chair Justin Meyers. "Rather that denounce the man's statement, Herger actually called him "a great American.' That's outrageous."
