The story is about a miller's daughter who is forced by a insecure father and a greedy king to spin straw into gold. When an earth elemental offers to help her do just that, she is forced to agree to give him her first-born child. But when he comes for the child, she will not give the babe up. And so he says that if she can guess his name, she can keep the child. In the end, she finds out his name and the child is saved. While a Jungian interpretation of the fairy tale can explain the intricacies of the story in detail, this is a Virgo tale at heart. It speaks to the idea of taking the simple things of life – the details - and turning them into eternal things – finding their meaning and bringing about change through the ability to name something. This is about transformation. These are Virgo qualities, because we take the raw 'stuff' of our lives and turn it into a wholeness. The fact that the maiden has so much trouble with the men in her life is a story for another day! So this month, take time to mediate, to find a mentor, to analyze what you want to be and do. Let no person be left behind as we move forward into a new vision of the world. Virgo rules the Tarot card The Hermit. Take time to name yourself, refine your ideas (the wheat), throw out what is unnecessary (the chaff), and see your perfected vision begin to manifest. The new moon is joined with Saturn, the energy which can help us find the perfect form to express who we really are. Saturn is the 'reality' principle of time and space, and can help us get disciplined, crystallize our vision into form and then stabilize it. Saturn in Virgo has especially encouraged us to take care of our health – body, mind & spirit – and to find the work that we are fit for.
This new moon also trines Jupiter in Capricorn, giving us the ambition to work harder, do better, and contribute our talents to creating a just world. Jupiter trining Saturn helps us be more resourceful with our time and energy, facilitating practical insights and problem-solving.
The Sabian Symbol for this New Moon at 8 Virgo: A Little girl holds a sheaf of wheat over her head as she performs a spinning dance. Being and becoming in the dance of life. Our feeling nature gets expressed through the exuberance of our response to life's gifts. Dance is the rhythmic energy of life and when we allow ourselves to respond to it we create life. Celebrate the harvests of what you've planted this year.
Astrological aspects:
Venus, Mercury and Mars are all traveling through Libra this month, so let beauty, harmony and peace be your guide.
August 30th – Venus goes into Libra. Take time to enjoy the beautiful things in life.
September 3rd – Sun conjoins Saturn. Making conscious the plans to 'get our act together.'
September 7th – Jupiter goes direct. You have the go ahead for projects you've been working on since May 9th. Jupiter expands our vision and provides us with the belief system that runs our life. In Capricorn, Jupiter gives ambition, determination and the ability to take on responsibility. Hard work and persistence and the ability to concentrate.
September 8th - Second of three trines between Saturn in Virgo and Jupiter in Capricorn (13 degrees). Trines enhance creativity and reduce resistance to change. A bit of effort goes a long way. With Saturn in Virgo, we get a sense of duty and personal responsibility, patience, prudence and modesty.
September 8th – Pluto goes direct at 29 Sagittarius. With Jupiter changing direction the day before, we can be ready for a big step forward. Pluto is completing his purpose of cleaning up our old belief systems.
