It's like conservative commentator David Brooks snorting that Senator Barack Obama could not "fit in naturally" at a salad bar at Applebee's, when in reality Applebee's doesn't have a salad bar. The GOP is far from authentic this year. It's why the Xcel Center, the convention site, can only hold 18,000 compared to the 84,000 that showed up for Senator Barack Obama's acceptance speech. On top of that, there were plenty of empty seats!

Speaking of Brooks, he added to the GOP's internecine fracas dismissing Limbaugh like an annoying tagalong. Appearing with Jim Lehrer on PBS last night, Brooks said Palin's humor was unique. "It's not the biting, belittling Rush Limbaugh type humor," Brooks said, jettisoning the increasingly unpopular Limbaugh from the GOP's inner folds.

The Right Wing is cracking up, it appears, behind the scenes and under the weight of the Palin strategy. They are bashing "liberal" elites and preaching Washington DC reform like it's 1994 all over again, but they are crumbling under the weight of such an enormous task. Republicans are the problem! Moreover, Palin is loaded down with controversy and scandal. She would never have been tapped 10 years ago, and not because she's a woman, but because the corporate Republican elite has grown over-confident that their pundits can spin and sell Americans anything.

They are the power-holders. They are the party of CORRUPTION and GREED and DUPLICITY, as acknowledged so clearly by Peggy Noonan.

The nation is watching as they haphazardly recycle every trick in their "narrative" playbook such the classic, "Liberal elites hate you and God." Or how about, "The liberal media is out to get us." It's wearing thin on Americans who have to live with the consequences of this election for the next 4 years; Americans who have little to show for all the wealth of this country.

It's exciting to watch. The Republicans can't completely get Palin off the ground. They are simultaneously inventing supposed attacks on her from the Left and defending her. They are losing legitimacy with the Christian Evangelicals who are reminded that moral scandals beset more Republicans. They are disorganized and frantic, and their half-measure efforts are exposing the mechanisms behind the traveling McCain carnival. To the intellectual Left in the media, dealing with Republicans must be like watching a thief steal the purse of an old lady and just let it happen.
