When this treachery causes the middle class to go down for the count, this nation will lose its heart and soul, the foundation that held it together and made it the envy of the world. When those who once occupied the middle class are forced to occupy the lower income rungs of our society, their purchasing power will no longer fuel and sustain this country's consumer-driven economy. And this will have a cascading effect on this economy that will become impossible to reverse.
And when this nation's consumer-driven economy that is no longer driven by the purchasing power of the people, dies, America's system of capitalism will die with it. These shallow-thinking Corporatists are, in effect, preparing their own demise because their insatiable thirst for immediate profits is clouding their minds. They are not just tearing down the middle class; they are tearing down the foundations upon which this nation was built. But, then again, we must remember that Corporate America has three key objectives that are paramount to its success; they are, in order of importance -- profits, increased profits and maximized profits; nothing else matters.
Corporations will continue to outsource manufacturing and product assembly jobs to China and other overseas nations. They will also do the same for computer, cell phone and other communication and electronics support services to India, Thailand and many other countries. At some point, America will completely lose the largest portion of its computer programming, systems development, accounting and associated services to workers in other countries where labor is dirt cheap and benefits don't exist. And millions more Americans will fall out of the middle class.
The middle class that's under siege includes not only those millions of Americans who have lost their jobs, are dependent on unemployment checks, have had their homes foreclosed, and those who have to set aside their pride and make regular visits to the local food pantry. It also includes millions of other people of the middle class that are still employed by corporations, but who live in constant fear of losing their jobs. They see what has happened to so many of their fellow Americans and they know that they may be next in line to become victims of this system. Many have given their corporate masters concessions in reduced wages and benefits and, yet, that never seems to be enough to satisfy those who earn their huge salaries and bonuses by reducing forces and increasing profitability.
And here's something that absolutely boggles the mind. By now, the majority of Americans, including the middle class, are aware that the Republicans and the corporations of America are joined at the hip, their objectives are identical. Corporations continue eliminating jobs, fully knowing that they are taking down the middle class. Republicans refuse to create jobs and are hell bent on eliminating all essential social programs that benefit people in need. And yet, millions of these same people who are under a direct and vicious attack by these two entities continue to support them. That's just plain crazy; that what's commonly referred to as self-inflicted pain or, as some might say, cutting your own throat.
What is almost beyond comprehension is the fact that as these massive, powerful corporations are eliminating millions of American's jobs and dismantling the middle class, these same Americans who are being thrown under the bus have no choice but to continue to purchase their products and services They are, in effect, contributing to the profitability of the very corporations who are destroying their jobs and making their lives miserable. That could not be more ironic, more tragic. It's like the people are locked into a system from which there is no escape.
There are ways by which this destruction of the middle class can be slowed and eventually reversed; the best way to do it is for the people of America to bring an enormous, unrelenting pressure on Congress; there is no question that Congress has the power to create a system to bring an end to job outsourcing by using very generous tax incentives and severe tax penalties on corporations. Also, organized, targeted national boycotts against the worst offending corporations could force them to bring jobs back to America. Continuous, massive protests and demonstrations involving millions of the middle class who are suffering could have a great impact. There are so many ways by which the people of America could strike back at their oppressors but nothing is happening and it seems as if millions of Americans are becoming resigned to their fate.
There are 313 million people who live in this country and there are a great many that possess the necessary talents and skills that could lead a massive movement to turn this situation around. Yes, they are out there somewhere but they just continue to watch as the unraveling of this nation takes place. They see what is happening, they see the middle class taking a terrible beating, and they know that is absolutely must be reversed. But, when their nation desperately needs them, where in the world are they?
