Obviously, some people can squeak with their self-worth in tact, against all odds.  I am a living example.  I was lucky.  My niece, now 21, was lucky.  Being lucky, however, does not come without deep emotional wounds and big psychotherapy bills.  And do we really want to live in a society that requires children to rely on luck?  I know we can do better than that.
