Mostly of course, as my childhood acquaintance pointed out, I must rely on myself for my behavior and future. The intellectual and spiritual demands of developing and living your own moral philosophy are great. Trust me. Confucius, I think, said something like: One should not occupy his time contemplating another life after death. One should contemplate the life they are living, the only life we know. I know what the cynical American is thinking. Yeah he was Chinese, look at them. What did he know?
Well, Confucius was a wise guy.
Another thing Confucius more or less promoted was harmony amongst people and with nature. He discouraged confrontation and disagreement, unlike the Christian God who blesses football contests and holy wars not to mention racism, bigotry and all manner of abuse and exploitation. One should learn and know, through their own self-consciousness, self-discipline, and moral sense to do the right thing by his personal honor and merit. No law against violent crime, or other crime for that matter need exist were people intellectually capable of applying Confucius' philosophy. But they're not.
People are frightened, stupid and superstitious; have been since thunder and lightening were invented. They are easily led.
Of course, the Americans losing to Islam is inevitable because history shows the only way for an invader to "win" against an indigenous population is to exterminate and genocide them. And surely, in the 21st century, one has to question what kind of victory that would be.
