My Tobacco Death is manufactured in Winston-Salem, a city that has the dubious distinction of having both its names on packs of cigarettes. It's ironic that the largess from Tobacco Death has subsidized growth of major Universities, and founded giant Hospitals in cities which manufacture the causes of illnesses of patients they try to treat. Guilt of descendant generations is a powerful motivator.
When will our government stop the insane subsidy of a product which kills, maims and harms so many of our citizens? Is it time to finally go cold turkey and quit? Our Congress has the power to stop subsidizing Big Tobacco. Are we getting any closer to that day?
During this time of taxpayer Bailouts for all kinds of private enterprise, this is one Bailout that we can put an end to, with good reason, if and only if Congress has the will to do so. For Mr. Obama's promise of Change, here's one that will make Big Tobacco pay its own way, for the first time in a century.
