Maine is one of those states.
One of the activists at Maine's chapter is a man by the name of Billy Rixon. Billy advocates for total divestment of all state monies in fossil fuels; supports the student-led effort to convince Bowdoin College to divest; and advocates for a decentralized renewable energy system that is guided by people, not profit margins.
Billy came to his position after his retirement from being a high school teacher in the State of Maine. His job as a teacher entailed teaching kids about climate science. Thus, he naturally was able to follow the trends of global warming. His true career then, just transferred from a job as a high school teacher to that of a climate change activist.
At present, with Obama being a central player in the approval of the XL Pipeline, Billy states he can only be hopeful. I must admit, his opinion and perception of our President is much more positive than this author's. Indeed, Billy believes that in Obama's heart, he would not ratify the Pipeline. I wish I could agree. Mike Whitney's synopsis of Obama's rule is more in line with my perception of the President.
Billy says the reason he does the work he does is, simply, the fear or awareness of extinction. This extinction not only entails that of thousands of creatures, but also the whole of humanity. In order to thwart this extinction, the number of parts of carbon dioxide has to diminish in the atmosphere to 350 parts per million. Thus, the organization's name, 350.org. Billy states that the current number of parts of carbon dioxide is up over 400. Thus we are over the limit and we have data showing that the number of species extinction is increasing in relation to the changes in atmospheric conditions, as well. I have reported those extinction figures in past articles.
Is this simple cause and effect or is it in line with the Gaia Hypothesis of James Lovelock? This hypothesis states that if you mess with one thing on this planet, you affect everything else. "It's a System, stupid, and not a pile of isolated parts."
One of the tactics that 350.org uses, as well as several other activist groups, is that of mass arrest. 350.org is planning such an activity this coming summer. In Maine these will happen within the state's two largest cities, Bangor and Portland. These two "go to jail" events will be a week apart according to Billy.
Also many of the Maine colleges, including Unity College and College of the Atlantic, plus some of the campuses of the University of Maine, such as Farmington, have divested from fossil fuels. Interestingly, the more exclusive private colleges--Bowdoin, Colby and Bates--would not divest. What could the drivers be to that?
Could it be that those colleges educating our "well-to-do kids" need to stay in line with their student's "well-to-do" parents? It's all in order to receive big tuition fees that will educate JR and Lil Missy so they can continue on in Mommy and Daddy's footsteps of dominating the world and the "Lower" (read Labor) Classes. It's simply hard to let go of world domination and several centuries of Upper Class rule! Let us stay in the Feudal Mindset! Let the Landowners (read Corporations) rule!
Truth, Nature as Essence, is damned into hell in such a system. Witches, deemed as anybody that speaks out on the system, get burned alive. Thus, to reduce the "firings", we have a standardized, corporate educational system having a CEO as its God. "Get those minds under control!" Yet, top-down rule with its intent of standardization is antipathetic to nature. Many of our current crises are the result of this elitist mindset.
It doesn't have to be this way.
Imagine an alternative world anchored in Creativity in which there is a synchronicity to life. In essence, this is James Lovelock's Gaia Hypothesis, which states that the planet is interactive in its unified system of unfolding life. To make this unified planetary movement more visual and understandable, watch the following film of starlings dancing. As you watch, wonder how these birds can turn "on a dime" and create a beautiful dance pattern.
Give special thanks to Meryl Ann Butler for posting this film on OEN.
Shall we join in Nature's dance, like the starlings, or do we remain in our domination ethos in which our movements are defined by sociopathic control freaks? The choice is up to each one of us. Even if we think we are doomed to hell, we can take up a new dance and perhaps, just perhaps, keep ourselves from hell.
Thank Nature for people like Meryl Ann and Billy who speak to this creative dance. Now, if we can just realize we are a part of this dance and NOT apart from it. We are participants and not isolated particles siting within an apartment. Muse on that word, apart-ment. Do you wish to take part in what happens in the world or do you want to be apart from it? These are the two meanings inherent in the word "apartment." The choice to how you see the word is yours. What is the responsible decision?
