To leave the ad buy running -- after a June 23 FAQ buried the e-commerce story -- bespeaks an attitude that "any opposition is good opposition" to the Mortgage Bailout bill. But really, this particular concern has been extinguished, and I want to extend my apology to Senator Chuck Grassley. He may be less evil, less Orwellian, and less given to Big Brother measures than as recently portrayed. (And, the provision cannot be entirely laid at Grassley's feet. Max Baucus and Charlie Rangel are also behind it, and the idea apparently came from a presidential budget request.) Let's face it. I like Dick Armey, but I also feel taken in and used as ammunition against Chuck Grassley. Perhaps Armey's battle against the Mortgage Bailout bill is the larger battle in his eyes, but when means and methods are not justified, are they really doing any favor for the ends? If opposition to the bill is genuinely justified, then it should be able to stand on its own merits (and withstand vetting) in its own right, and it should not need to lean upon overblown fears of an unrelated provision in the bill. Sheesh!!
