So is every believer mentally ill? Only if we claim that an unwillingness to think in abstract terms is a mental illness.
This unwillingness manifests in their need to adhere to the concrete black and white of moral absolutism. By placing people and behaviors into predetermined moral slots the world becomes more understandable and therefore more manageable.
The majority of other believers are sane and sincere, grounded in our shared reality, who understand their mythologies of origin are parable stories designed to teach the early illiterate adherents important moral lessons.
We ignore fundamentalists at our own peril. Well organized and funded, they present a strong regressive political presence in America today.
Look up the term Christian Dominionism and beware the theocratic state, for which they yearn.
