The cross is the ancient symbol for the world center, the cosmic tree of life. It is the point where Heaven and Earth meet, the union of these opposites. It is the descent of Spirit into Matter, of soul into body. The cross represents the four directions and humanity's relationship to those directions. So we are called to the vision of archetypal humanity, illumined by light, arising out of the sea mist like Aphrodite arising from the foaming waters. What a magical images.
